First school in the ACC the B1G goes after if that conference falls apart? Notre Dame.

I don't see the SEC getting too worked up over Vandy if that happened, but that makes sense.

I don't see the ACC failing apart, I'd assume the B12 is closer to the brink due the fact that of the 10 teams, 2 matter and the other 8 are their servants. The ACC has less high end merchandize, but a more even distribution of power. If the lose... Say UVA and GT for example, they are still a viable power conference.

But if the issue becomes you have to be a conference champion to make the playoff and it bites ND in the ass, then their bluff will (finally) be called and it's off to the B1G for them.

Just my opinion, I ain't that bright.

Your source might have been smoking a crack pipe last night...as the ACC will never add a 5th team from the State of NC...as that wouldn't increase their TV worth by even 1 dime.

TCU (Dallas/FT Worth market) added nothing to their MWC TV Deal (same for Salt Lake City's Univ of Utah), which only averaged $800,000 - $1.2 Million per year...yet when they got promoted to P5...suddenly they were paid $20 Million plus, regardless of their worth.

Similar if UCONN landed in the ACC, Big Ten, etc...they would have paid the average of all the other teams in those conferences ($20 Million - $30 Million).

Just like if Memphis ever won the lottery and joined the SEC...Memphis would suddenly be paid $30 Million or more per year.

TCU added nothing to the tv deal. But they provided football legitimacy at a time the B12 needed it to retain BCS status. That was the whole deal there - plus some good ole TX politics.

That's not the same situation as today. And today, there are talks about phased-in conference shares. Doubtful UConn or Memphis would get a full share for a few years.

The B1G has been going after ND for years. They would certainly not wait until the ACC fell apart.

The ACC isn't far behind the Big XII in terms of instability - there is a reason they also have a media rights deal in place; it's to bar the door from people who are trying to leave. Just look at Maryland.

Quote:The B1G has been going after ND for years. They would certainly not wait until the ACC fell apart.

They'll have to as long as the media rights deal is in place and the conference is stable. If a couple schools left to join the Big XII and SEC all bets are off and the old Big East schools could quickly turn into the 'new' ACC.

I would assume that they have any weight at all in the NYC market is a point in their favor, also being a flagship state school with great academics being others.

Poor recruiting areas and football that is not completely established as well as travel would be some negatives.

Honestly, if you can't find the value for the B12 in schools like UConn and BYU and Houston and others, then you're just being naively hopeful toward your own cause.

Yes, Memphis has many positives as well, but to think there are no negatives is also deluding yourself.

Unlike some folks would have you believe - it's not even close to a "no-brainer".

In other words, SHOULD the B12 expand and SHOULD they choose say, Cincinnati and UConn...it won't be some travesty or miscarriage of justice. There are a handful of schools with really nice qualities that would make solid additions to the B12.
You neglect Memphis because you want to be correct so bad that it isn't us.

Incorrect.

I just don't downplay other programs in some pseudo belief that it will improve the University of Memphis' chances. You never build yourself up by tearing down others.

Make no mistake - no matter what reasons for this school and/or against that school that are posted on a message board - it will have ZERO effect on what that league eventually does. And if it should happen that Memphis doesn't make the next expansion round, it doesn't automatically mean the B12 leadership is misguided. That's just an insecure fanbase looking to make excuses before the fact.

The school is putting it's best foot forward, but so are other deserving schools.

We can all only hope that Memphis ends up making it, but it's not a conspiracy if they don't.

Excellent, rational post.

Thanks for posting. They are going to expand- don't know when or who. But it's going to happen. We just gotta keep improving in every aspect that we can. Thought this was interesting when asked about candidates:

"However, Boren would not list any names. When asked if there were schools no one was talking about that could emerge, he said reporters probably were already speculating on the right six or seven schools."

I'm pretty sure we are in the mix. Can't afford to be left out again.

Do you think his reference to notre dame and the mention of national recognition favors BYU?

Here's another article referencing Big XII expansion and President Boren on Thursday. The difference with this article is that Memphis is mentioned.

Quote from reporter: "It's a show of support for realignment that has fired up fans of Group of 5 schools UCF, Memphis, UConn and others hoping to jump to the Big 12." Unquote

@DanWolken The Big 12 used to sign 73% of the elite players from Texas. Since realignment, it's getting less than half.
