I thought beer was going to be allowed in the stands, which would render the Roost redundant, unless the rumor that we'll be getting a picnic and dining area, like WKU has, are true.

When it was reported on here after that RBI meeting it was a bar/restaurant type setting in a building and an outside area, all tied in with a Rice HOF for baseball. If it had a balcony or something that would be pretty cool. I'm looking forward to enjoying a beer in my seat instead of the Roost this year though.

Oh, that's right, I remember now. That's a recent development, so IMO there's no cause for concern that the drawings aren't ready yet.

Another proposal was to add boxes. Is that still in the works? That will be done by adding modules, so it's more of the same as far as visuals go.

??? The drawings have already been developed and approved. The announcement is simply waiting on full funding pledged. If I recall correctly, total cost, including the new scoreboard, is somewhere in the $10MM range.

Cool! That's great news. I didn't know the plans for the new building were that far along.

Has Rice ever done anything to encourage smaller donors to get in on these projects? Like $500/$1000 for a brick with your name (or someone you chose). There might be a lot of people from the neighborhood for example that have been going to Rice baseball games for years since it's our flagship sport but don't want to commit to thousands of dollars. As a young alum I know I'm not going to make a donation that would really impact a new project like this but I'd consider something like that. Maybe there wouldn't be enough to make an impact but my HS used to do stuff like that for some improvements.

I understand the drawbacks (Greenspan not having $$$ for his EZF) but in Houston it seems to be popular to put development drawings out there even if they might change some before they are finished. I think it builds some excitement to finish off the funding after you get past 50% pledged. Maybe we already show the renderings to big donors? No one outside of the people on this board remember that Greenspan put forward an EZF rendering and now it's completely different and at the other end of the stadium.

How did the official university policy allow Greenspan to make his EZF announcement? BOT approved without the funding?

Beer will be sold at the concession stands and in the Roost. This year the general beer sales will not take place right away but will be phased in about half way through the season.

Phased in?

It's beer.

Not a new concept.

The attitude toward beer is just bizzare, especially for a university with two bars on campus and an annual festival called "Beer Bike."

This will really help attract top candidates when the OG retires (whenever he wants to).

The Rice baseball program was going to attract elite candidates regardless. In it's current state, Reckling is one of the Top 20 college baseball facilities in the country. The additions will only make it better.

Definitely a top college park but there is a lot of $$$ being thrown into P5 parks so like you said I'm glad we are improving.

Any word on my question above? For big capital improvements do we only approach big donors (hundreds of thousands) until a certain point of funding or until the whole thing is funded? Does anyone who has been around Rice longer than 8 years know of a fundraising attempt to bring in larger participation from $500-$1000 level donors?

Nope

The changes to the football program that Karlgaard alluded to previously are as follows:

Instead of a sans-serif font, future Rice football programs will use a seriffed font, such as Times new Roman or Copperplate Gothic Bold.

Those are the changes in your Rice football program.

That is all.

Yes- this was done for the original construction of Reckling - the bricks are in the main entryway.
I agree that it's an excellent approach to helping fund major construction.

(then you can casually brag and drop the line "yeah I've got my name on a building")
