NOT TRUE! Here's why:

1). Yes many players left the program once Coach Cal left. But this happens most of the time. Players and staff leave when there is a new head coach of a program.

2). In 2009 our program was left at a VERY HIGH LEVEL! We were competing for recruits with the likes of Duke, UNC, and Kansas. During that time we could have recruited Lebron James!

Question: Which coach inherited a more mess?

Coach Cal - Inherited the FREAKIN Tic Price era (with the scandal)

Josh Pastner- Inherited a program that just had drafted D. Rose #1, Tyreke Evans and coming off multiple deep runs in the NCAA Tounament.

This is year #7 and there is a serious decline toward a direction that would be hard to overcome.
Question to the Pastner supporters? When do you anticipate a deep run in the tournament? Next year after we lose D. Lawson, S. Goodwin, Tarrent, and others? Are we still saying just wait until (fill in the blank) gets here?
I lost my faith in Coach Pastner's SYSTEM after the 4 KINGS year. That team was senior laden and we get BLOWN out by Virginia.

Pastner has piled up wins against lower level teams, but we are Memphis and we should hammer the lower level teams, period.

Can someone please let me know the winning percentage against top 50 teams? I guarantee it is not good.

Unfortunately it was a Corvette in the bottom of the sink hole in Bowling Green museum. .

Basically a clean slate in weak conference C-USA. New coaches start with a new staff and recruit their own players anyway. The point is that by year seven, we should be on the INCLINE and have a competitive team to make a decent run in the tournament. Again, we have seen what a senior-laden team does under Pastner- Multiple 20+ point blow-outs and an early exit in the first round. What other proof do you need that his system is mediocre, which forms mediocre teams and results. Again guys this is YEAR 7 and we are on the decline! Wake up!

Maybe he should have a bag man with the keys to a Delorean. They are back in production now. That way there would be a trunk full of money to buy players. Seems to be the only way to consistently win big here.

If well-maintained, used Subarus are pricey and sought after. But the contract is such a burden, we'll be lucky to have busfare.

Subarus are very efficient .07-coffee3

Left in good shape? These attempts to re-write history are always laughable at best.

At this point, can you not just let it go?

RE: In 2009 PASTNER WAS HANDED THE KEYS TO A CORVETTE!
Look, heres the truth. Only losers attempt to make their circumstances look or sound worse than it really was. I don't know if its Pastners attempt at humor, but he sounds like a victim loser the way he talks about how "hard it was" and how "he didnt even think he would field a team", and further, how he "took over a situation noone else wanted"

First off, he was given an amazing opportunity. Second, hundreds of coaches would have wanted the opportunity. Is this a career for *******? No, it isn't. Its a career for competitors. Yes, its a tough gig, but so f'ing what. A lot of jobs are tough, that is part of what makes them great.

To say a coach wouldn't want the Memphis job after Cal is like saying a coach would rather his team play in the CBI then to make it into the NCAA as a 16 seed. Just the opportunity to play for a national title, despite the odds against them, is agreed as the higher desired across the board. RC was just a lazy lame duck AD.

Second, as the OP stated, we were in on top recruits all over the country based on the Memphis brand alone. JP was able to sign Latavious Williams, Will Barton, and Jalen Kendrick.. all top 20 recruits, all outside of Memphis, and all because of the Memphis brand

Also, the "4 or 5" scholarship players, which again, only a loser would say because it was more than that, consisted of mostly top 75 recruits.

He started a senior backcourt, including a top 50 PG that started for one of the 33-4 teams, and while taking a backseat to Derrick Rose, saved us with great 3 point shooting throughout the NCAA tournament.

He had a top 50 senior 2 guard that was one of the most prolific 3 point shooters in Tiger history

He had the #1 Juco in the country from two seasons before that set the record for most 3s in a game the season prior, and was a senior

He had a super talented to top 75 G/F that could play any position from the 1 to the 4

He had a top 50 center, and in addition, a serviceable center from Memphis

He was able to keep a commitment from the #1 Juco in the country to add to the above, AND

He was the recipient of a MDAA transfer from Duke who was a future NBA player

So that is 7 scholarship players, plus the addition of an 8th, not including the very serviceable walk-ons such as Drew Barham.

Poor Pastner tells us he was left with only FOUR scholarship players because his insecurity brings about the need to have you pat him on the back and say "thank you so much for taking over something noone wanted and keeping it at a high standard"

The Memphis brand was in good shape. The roster not so much. JP added some quality players early, then we learned no one could shoot.

The roster wasn't nearly as bad as Josh tries to make everyone believe it was. It had more overall talent than 90% of the teams in the country.

Willie Kemp - top 50 recruit, senior, started for a 33-4 team
Doneal Mack - top 50 recruit, senior
Robert Sallie - former #1 Juco
Wesley Witherspoon - top 75 recruit, could play the 1 thru 4
Angel Garcia - top 50 recruit
Pierre Niles
Will Coleman - #1 Juco recruit
Elliot Williams - MCD-AA top 15 recruit
Drew Barham
DJ Stephens

That is a pretty damn good nucleus ESPECIALLY knowing we have Joe Jackson and company coming in

How many coaches would take that team and cry about it, telling everyone they only have 4 scholarship players and are scared they might not field a team. Where is the attitude of gratitude??

NOT TRUE! Here's why:
