LCME is the accrediting body for medical schools. It requires new medical schools to submit, as a part of the accreditation process, a business plan including a 10-year pro forma budget.

Recently, UH put out a RFP for just such a business plan.

http://esbd.cpa.state.tx.us/bid_show.cfm?bidid=122389

The plan specifies that the school will open in 2019 and focus on primary care.

That narrow narrative will really restrict future research $$$...as FSU made that same mistake when they started out in 2000....and that mistake was not made by UCF, as UCF visioned their new Medical School to be a leader in future research in the New Medical City that is being developed in South Orlando.

FSU is now kicking and screaming about their blown opportunity on mainly specializing in Primary/Family Care.

Perhaps. But the Houston area already has a UT and Baylor medical schools. UH had to find a niche not covered by those two to even get a medical school at all (which has not been approved yet by the Texas State Board of Higher Education--and may still not get approved because of the presence of those two schools). When you are late to the game, you have to take what you can get.

I imagine UT and Baylor already being in town has something to do with it. To increase the odds of it being approved, we have to to focus on where the demand is.

Good point.

Also, FSU blew it as they had a chance to locate their school in Orlando (much larger hospital market) vs college town "Tallahassee".

UCF is so glad they did.

Even FAMU knew that was a good idea.

This medical school is way overdue for The University Of Houston... Very happy for where this fine program is headed.

Screw famu. They were hosed by fsu and the state legislature and we are paying for it as we can't build a law school. That hurts us politically.

RE: OT: UH planning new medical school
Here in Philly we have lots of med schools including the UPenn med school which is always Top 10. So the battle is for 2nd place locally. In past years it may have been Jefferson, Temple or Hahnemann (now Drexel).

We needed a new med school building badly and finished one several years ago. Now I look at the rankings and ratings and Temple med now has the 2nd place slot locked up. Locally it's UPenn, Temple, Jefferson, Drexel. So I have to give credit to the new med school building for the improvement. We now attract better staff and students. It has also helped to attract more research dollars.

I got to meet Dr. Oz when I went down there for a day of free health screenings. Temple med saw a whopping 5k people in one day checking 5 vital health issues... BP, diabetes, etc.

Just curious, what's the estimated cost of opening a new medical school?
