Noticed the blurb at the end of the article that we have now lost verbal Ron George to WMU. I know we will lose guys...but I hate losing guys to MAC schools, and in particular to division rivals. Seems like we've lost a few over the past couple classes to the Broncos. But we don't seem to be recruiting many of the same guys as Northern.

Perhaps he can play both sports at UT...is that even possible these days?

Pretty rare feat. Would be very difficult to do nowadays, imo. Unless he were willing/allowed to miss a MAC championship game and/or bowl game, someone in that position would miss all of the non-conference portion of the basketball schedule, and then would take a few weeks if not a good month to transition to basketball "condition" to a point that the individual would be a contributor on the court. Obviously an increased chance of injury that could affect both sports, as well. But hey, if both coaches at UT were open to it, and he used a football scholly instead of one of the many fewer bball schollys available, why not?

So if he did this he would be on football scholarship and then join the basketball team after the football season. There was a UT football player about 10 years or so ago that did this. He played on a football scholarship and walked onto the basketball team when they were short on players and he played basketball the last couple of years of his collegiate career.

6'3" power forward. Mostly took up space. Len Matuszek was on baseball schollie and was an outstanding basketball player for the Rockets. Rich Eberlin, Mo Hall, Bill Brown, Aaron Hopkin, the young lady from Sylvania, whose name escapes me but who played hoops and high jumped, Bill Backensto and many others doubled up for the Rockets. Most did so in back-to-back seasons but that was before divisions, bowl games, etc.

Also, I don't think the University or the NCAA looks highly at this.... Just saying.

Yeah, bad enough to rip Fleck and his recruits that way but Rocket coaches? I think he meant to say something else. I hope. Maybe "or" is supposed to be "over"?

Way too harsh. This is some 17 or 18 year old kid trying to make possibly the most important decision in his life to date and I suspect that he is desperately trying to make the decision that is best for him. You don't have to agree with his decision but its his life and therefore his decision to make.

Who knows what turned him around----Maybe it was the coaching turnovers, maybe he starting reconsidering after watching that Black Friday game or maybe it is one of a hundred other possible reasons. You can disagree with his decision but you can't fault him for doing what he (rightly or wrongly) believes is in his best interest to do.

Besides from a purely selfish perspective, I want recruits who want to be here who are 100% committed to the program, not ones who may be having second doubts about joining the program.

Maybe he just wants a chance to tackle his Pittsburgh CC teammate Ronnie Jones who will be a Rocket commit as a RB.

On that note, do not tweet at recruits. Fans from schools all over the country do it, but technically it is a NCAA violation for fans/donors from a school to tweet directly at recruits.

What I mean above....here's an example:

Let's say there is a recruit with the Twitter handle of @IamRecruit and let's just say an Eastern Michigan fan (bear with me) does the following tweet:

@IamRecruit I hope you choose Eastern Michigan. Go Eagles!

That is a NCAA recruiting violation. It would be considered a minor violation for EMU, but it's still a violation and could get the school and the person that tweeted it in trouble with the NCAA if they really wanted to do something about it.

Banality of twitter, twitterers and twittering at a kid aside, wouldn't we all love to see the NCAA attempt to hold a twitterer or a university accountable for that scenario?

For one thing, if it were even REMOTELY realistic for the NCAA to do that, we'd all be signing on to twitter with "IAMBG..." accounts, twittering away at their recruits.

For another, there is a huge difference between enticement with promise of rewards and gifts and free communication such as simply talking or voicing an opinion even directly to a recruit, let alone Terry's paranoia (which may very well also be NCAA's) of simply talking ABOUT a recruit on a message board.


NCAA wouldn't HAVE enough investigators or lawyers to enforce the message board scenario and if they had even a remotely legal leg to stand on, every message board would shut down to avoid liability as other sites that have been shown contributing to illegal or damaging activity have done. Your own would be history.
