So, the CAA is making a "major" announcement tomorrow at the North Charleston Coliseum. Can you say conference basketball tournament.

The CAA is in the final year of a 3-year deal to host tournament in Baltimore. You do the math.

Hell yes!

Upgrade with area, but definitely gonna be tough travel for casual hit and run fans.

While I loved the convenience of Baltimore, I love this idea as I come for the whole tourney some years.

I would actually hop on a plane for Charleston, rather than drive to Baltimore.

The family will certainly love some warmer weather in March as well. And the wife will love the food/culture.

Win Win Win for me.

When you make the NCAA tourny you turned the Coliseum into JMU Richmond campus. Would happen in Baltimore as well. You wouldn't be able to do that in Charleston. Neither would many other schools. Just my 2 cents and hope we get a chance to determine that.

You're right, from a JMU perspective...though I doubt we would have had 6500+ in Baltimore like we did in RIC.

If Baltimore had been a commercial success, the tournament would have stayed.

The rest of the CAA schools outside of maybe W&M and UNCW simply don't bring any ticket sales.

Awesome. Have a feeling BSKB will be happy about this also. Pretty sure he's a fan of that city.

Looks the highs during the tourney will be in the 60's, perfect for some golf.

RE: CAA tournament moving to Charleston
About time they stopped catering to the northern schools in this area. UNCW, Charleston, JMU and W&M are the top 4 in attendance this year, and it's not really even close. The 4 northern teams all draw about 2,000 per game or less, including 6-2 Hofstra. And all 4 of them draw 50 % or less per game than UNCW. Elon is last because they play in the smallest gym; in a bigger one, they'd probably outdraw the 4 northern teams.

Plus, I bet some of the northern fans who DO show up will continue to do so, as a trip to Charleston is a nice vacation for northern fans (much like the Baseball tournament is when its played in Wilmington or Charleston). Keep the tournament in the south and lets party.

CAA Tourney and then on to Nat's Spring Training - I have to get working on the plans. Nothing against Baltimore or Northern cities, but I am sick of snow now and the thought of 70s in March - can generate some road trip excitement.

Has the CAA ever considered DC as the site? Seems to be more of a true midway point and more of HUB in terms of plane and even train travel.

Where in DC?

Couldn't swing the Verizon Center.

There are 10 to 15K arenas at GW and GM - but I doubt they would work due to conference mismatches.

RE: CAA tournament moving to Charleston
I love that the tournament is moving away from Baltimore to North Charleston. The Baltimore experiment has proven to be a flop and all of us who lobbied not to move it from Richmond have been vindicated. It was a dumb move by Tom Yeager.
The tournament would still be best in Richmond, but North Charleston is better than Baltimore in March.

What I don't like...
1-North Charleston isn't Charleston. It is a 20 minute drive to historic Charleston where all visitors will want to be to soak up the history and atmosphere. North Charleston is nondescript and will give you none of the flavor that is unique to the area.
2-Attendance will not increase because it will be held in a lower populated area that also won't be an easy trip for most. The College of Charleston doesn't even draw much on their home court. They will draw even less at the coliseum (unless they make the finals in a given year then the bandwagon fans come out of the woodwork).
3- The North Charleston coliseum is too big for the current CAA's needs with 11,000 capacity. The old CAA with a tighter geography and strong programs like VCU, ODU, and George Mason needed a bigger arena to meet demand especially in the last 2 rounds. I would prefer that the tournament be played in the TD Arena in historic Charleston. It only seats 5,100, maybe a little more if they shoehorn temp seating. But that is plenty big for the CAA. The only game in last year's CAA tourney that drew more than 5,100 was the championship and that only had 5,700.
Plus the TD Arena is very new and the coliseum is more than 2 decades old.

I suspect Yeager was scared of having the event on the homecourt of a conference team. Technically, TD arena is 2 blocks off of the CoC campus. If the contract is already signed, it is too late to reevaluate that decision. As tough as it is to accept, the CAA has become a conference that should play its marquee postseason tournament in a 5,100 seat arena.

With that being said, I would go to the tournament if it were held in Boston or Miami, but I am an exception and I am a college basketball junkie.
Now it is time to talk the family into a 2017 Charleston vacation with history, beach time, golf, and 3 days of hoops.
2018 and 2019 too
