Exclamation Is this an acceptable recruiting tactic?
We have been told by a couple of recruits who we invited for an OV that they were told another school would rescind their offer if they visited. Is this common for schools to do this?

I m not passing judgment -- I don t think we do it but maybe we should

Paul Johnson used to threaten this at GT a few years ago

Fairly common. Both AState and South Alabama do it that I know of.

Yes, some coaches say once you commit, you don't take any other visits. However, that can lead to resentment.

Seems to me you'd only do that to a recruit you didn't care if you lost. No way you tell some guy being chased by every school in the country he's not gonna get an offer from you if he visits somewhere else.

If a kid commits and you accept it...the offer should be safe and his recruiting should be closed. If he opens it up again...the school is likewise free to keep looking.

If there is no commit and acceptance...everyone is free to keep looking.

That's how I would see it....but that's just me.

Mainly you do it to guys that are backup plans at P5 schools. If he wants to go chasing the opportunity to ride the bench for 5 years at Alabama vs playing 4 at my school, I say give him the ultimatum.

Coaches should be telling a recruit that before they commit, you cannot take other campus visit. Take all your visits first, then commit!

Really don't see the problem. Basically saying, if you are going to look around so are we.

Like telling your wife to be, I still want to marry you in a week and a half but until then I am going to go ahead and keep visiting other women. You know, just to embrace the experience.

If a guy is going to make a commitment to take your scholarship offer, than that means you shouldn't have to worry about losing them to another school.

We've talked about this before, but decommit is a word that only exists in College Football. When basketball and baseball players commit, they usually don't change their minds.

There are other recruits out there who would desperately love to get your FBS offer. Why does a guy get to put a "hold" on that slot while he tries to find another better one?

Yes, CPJ has been notorious for this at GT forever.

I assume you mean if the coach from University A told the kid once he committed to University A that if he went on visits after this, his commitment would be pulled.

Fran used to do it. I can see both sides of it... Lots of these kids haven't had a chance to travel anywhere as kids (my first plane ride was on a recruiting visit). But from a coach's perspective, you don't want to leave a kid hanging because another kid is committed but not really.

Not sure how our new guy runs it.

IIWII and I agree with the value of following through with a commitment. Unfortunately, our culture has devolved to a level of entitlement that concepts like commitment, integrity and honesty are only relevant in terms of what the ignorant masses believe. We can deny lying or betrayal by simply noting that "it depends on what the definition of 'is' is.". 17-18 year old " stars" are ill equipped to deal with the kind of attention that websites and social media supply for recruiting. When I was being recruited in the mid 80s, scouts attended HS games and HS coaches sent game film and letters to specific schools. It was ego inflating enough to be discussed in the local newspaper. I can't imagine what these kids think about themselves.

Everyone understands that even though we call it a "commit", it's a statement of intent as things stand now that is subject to change, but that term is just too clunky to use.

It's no different than a high school senior taking an acceptance to a safety school and then changing their mind when their dream school calls them up from the waiting list.

Or someone leaving accepting a job offer and then turning it down because they got one of the jobs they applied for that pays more.

It's a principle as old as time and much older than Gen Y.

Honestly, for a lot of these kids, its the first time in their lives anyone showed an interest in them.
