Exactly. Isn't that the point of buying the channel? Just get an existing channel, scrap the format and presto bingo! It's ASN 24/7 sports network. All I can gather is ASN must be doing something right if Sinclair is Ok with this.

They only paid $350,000,000 for it. I think they can afford to pay C-USA a paltry $14,000,000 per year.

Doesn't sound like they have any real expanded plans for rebranding the network as the cable outlet for ASN 24 hour sports network....but its still early in the process. Sinclaire does expect to be able to get it into 50 million homes (up from its current 30 million)---which would be similar to the reach of CBS-Sports.

Right, sounds like it will remain the Tennis channel. Interesting that Sinclair expects to benefit from $200 million in Tennis channel losses for tax purposes.

TV Contract at the top of the agenda...
Bloomberg wrote a long article about the tennis channel months ago about how it will stay focused on tennis and other European sports

We need to be the first conference to put Pepsi or Coke on the helmets and DirecTV on the jerseys and maybe Budlight down the pantlegs. Nothing too big but visible on TV. If they aren't gonna pay us directly from sponsored ads during the games, ie TV contract, then we should cut out the middle man and just get the best sponsors ourselves. I'm only half kidding.

I honestly wouldn't care. If it helps our schools be more competitive, then do it. The only problem is if it actually works and brings in more revenue, the P5 schools will just start doing it too because no money is enough for them.

Some tidbits but not too much detail from the meetings:

http://pilotonline.com/sports/college/co...8703c.html

Selig said he was "pleasantly surprised" regarding hearing about TV negotiations but the negotiations won't wrap up for another month or two. So maybe it'll be higher than what we initially heard. Still likely a drop though.

Pretty typical move. Under promise over deliver. Haynes goes out of business every month. Set the bar low a few months before and then have it come in higher and people are pleasantly surprised and almost happy in losing money.

Sounds like the jist is that the distribution and quality of broadcasts will be an upgrade but still think that the $$ is going to be in that range that was discussed earlier.

Interesting that expansion in the overall scope was talked about. Sounds like something could be brewing or looked into further if the savings are enough.

Just throwing it out there---I wonder if CUSA and ASN are working on a MAC/ESPN type deal where the schools will commit to upgrading production capabilities to a set standard and ASN will agree to buildi out a large capacity ESPN-3 type platform to warehouse and stream the broadcasts CUSA provides. That wouldn't provide any more money---but it would be a huge step forward in basic availability of the programing and could represent a massive increase in exposure (and a great selling point for recruiting) for basketball and non-revenue sports. It also would be a nice asset for filling time on ASN's 24 hour network.

^ This was my original thought too. Increasing corporate sponsors to offset costs seems to fit with that strategy. However, after some digging, I saw where sponsors are solicited through a division of Fox Sports...not sure how that'd work.

The quote by Selig is interesting in that it does, as others of you are pointing out, contradict what was alluded to before by the same writer when he passed on info from an anonymous source, that the money was going to be cut in half. You can't state that you will be happy with your compensation if it's cut in half so why did he make this statement?

“I think we’re going to be in a really good place with the quality of our broadcasts, the distribution of our broadcasts and the compensation we will receive as a league."

And this statement:

“I’m really pleased with the preliminary reports and preliminary discussions that have been held between Conference USA and our various TV partners,” he said.

Does ODU even get any of the old CUSA contract? From ODU's perspective, the new CUSA contract is much better than what they have going in the CAA.
