And the hateful articles continue - losing to ECU brings a horrible focus
So sorry to post yet another CA article (there are more BTW - it could be worse BTW) --- honestly - 'the hate is strong in this one.' So, I restrain. >>>

Quote:For Pastner, loss to ECU was the beginning of the end
"It's over. For all practical purposes, the Josh Pastner era at the University of Memphis ended Sunday at FedExForum with a loss to an East Carolina team that hadn't won a road game or a conference game all year."
"But at this point, it's doesn't even feel like a debate any longer. It feels like a long, sad, final trudge. Barring a miraculous turnaround, Pastner will be dismissed at the end of this season. Sunday was the beginning of the end."...

Who does Memphis target?
Established veteran high dollar coach....or young up-and-coming coach that can recruit.
No reason for Memphis hoops to be mediocre.

Memphis Basketball should be better with their history, facilities, location etc.. Hopefully the next coach gets you back to where you should be

Seems like Calkins is trying to play both sides of the story....now ripping the contract extension:
And here you may join the university in lamenting the massive and ill-advised contract extension it gave Pastner in April 2013. That contract — signed by athletic director Tom Bowen and former university president Shirley Raines — extended Pastner's deal through 2018. Worse, it included automatic renewals in the spring of 2014 and 2015 that extended the contract through 2020.
Yet Calkins on Parrish's radio show APPROVED of the contract extension back in 2013

Calkins and Parrish both are populists raised on twitter...as they are counting on their listeners/readers to be stupid and have short-term memory.

Memphis losing to ECU pretty much any year is bad. Memphis losing to ECU THIS year at HOME is really, really, really bad.

Parrish is an average sports writer at best and a fire chaser looking to stir interest at worst. There's really nothing he says that's worth reading/listening to. While acknowledging the discrepancy in the 2 columns, Calkins is gifted with prose in a way that I'm not sure why he's remained in Memphis 20 years. He's the most gifted writer we've had here in 30 years and ranks with a couple of legends 45-60 years ago......while understanding/acknowledging the conflict noted above.

Back in the C-USA days, beating Memphis in basketball was the dream scenario.
Now, in the AAC, it's UCONN. We've already beaten Cincy & Memphis... UCONN, you're on the clock. Haha

Nothing hateful at all written in that article. Sometimes the simple truth hurts.

It was near impossible to beat them in the Calipari days. UCF used to sellout those games. Hopefully Memphis can get back that magic.

It wasn't magic. It was Calipari and his sidekick William Wesley (WorldWide Wes) cheating their asses off, and getting great players who otherwise might not have qualified to play college ball. They moved their act to UK, and are still doing the same thing.
Memphis has had consistently good basketball since the 1950s, but the two greatest runs were with Dana Kirk in the 80s, and then with Calipari. Kirk had most of his NCAAT appearances vacated, and Calipari lost his best season.
Memphis will likely never recover THAT kind of "magic," b/c our image can't stand any more blows like that, but even without that, we have had long periods of sustained success, just not that spectacular, so hopefully, the next coach will get us back there, at least.
