I feel like both those options invalidate mathematics as we know it.

1 /= 4
2 /= 4

03-lmfao
you know how the voting works right? its not simply 1 point per vote
(hint--UNC got 791 votes...there are not 791 voters)

since i assume you'll struggle, i'll do the math for you.
IF WKU coach ranked us as 22nd, we'd have 4 votes.
IF 2 coaches each ranked us as 24th, we'd also have 4 votes

Ouch, man. I didn't mean an offence by my first reply. It was just a misguided attempt at humor. Thanks for the explanation though.

This got me to thinking. Forget the RPI, if we win out up until the championship game, where do you think we rank in the polls?

Would a national ranking be enough to trump a CUSA Championship game loss and low RPI given that what this team did last year in the NCAA Tourney?

Thoughts?

It really hurts us that there are no dominant P5 conference leaders. If Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan State, etc were dominating their conferences they would be eliminating the conference's lesser teams. As it stands now a lesser team that might not normally make the tournament has a good shot because they beat [TOP CONFERENCE TEAM] (or the team that beat the team) and is from a P5 conference. Lots of "mid-majors" will be left out of the NCAA tourney this year. This could also be a year where a "mid-major" that makes it in can cause trouble....

4 points doesn't mean 4 votes; it means one of the following:

A single 22nd place vote (4 points)
Two 24th place votes (2 points each)
One 23rd place vote and one 25th place vote (1 and 3 points, respectively)
Two 25th place votes and a 24th place vote
Four 25th place votes

On the AP poll. UAB appeared in the #24 slot on two voter's polls:

Fletcher Mackel (WDSU-TV; New Orleans, LA)
John Feinstein (NPR; Washington DC)

RE: UAB with 4 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll
Even if we win out we will only have an RPI of ~ 52. That might get us talked about by the selection committee if we lose in the conference tournament. I don't think it'll get us a bid, unless we lose to MTSU in the final. The only way C-USA gets 2 bids to the NCAA is to have both UAB and MTSU not lose a game except vs each other. Even then, it is still questionable.

I'm not sure C-USA gets more than 1 NIT bid this year either.

NIT bids go to the top 100 teams not in the NCAA tournament. We don't have but UAB and MTSU even close to that number.

I think UAB and Middle Tennessee could win out and meet in the finals. What would middle tennessee's RPI be if they won out to the final (including beating us) then lost to us in the final?

KenPom.com has UAB favored by 2 at WKU, and dogs by 2 at Marshall.

If MTSU was to win out until the CUSA Tourney they would be 23-5 with a projected RPI of 33.

Most likely right around 30 RPI, but they wouldnt have the OOC wins to get in. They would have top 100 RPI wins over UAB once and Belmont.

Auburn might stay top 100 I think.

You think RPI of 33 wouldn't be able to get in?

I think MTSU would get in under that scenario.

Not a sure thing but should help pass the eye test.

The committee does their own research for their eye test. They don't say,"let's see what a bunch of sportswriters think." The eye test doesn't include polls.

The selection committees in the past hasn't really looked at a teams RPI. They have used the RPI to evaluate how many top 50 wins you have. Top 50, not top100

And I have to disagree with you because if by your example if they evaluate top 50 RPI wins then they have to look at a team's RPI. It not a coincidence that not many teams with an RPI above 60 have gotten an at-large bid. A good RPI will get you noticed by the committee; a team's overall resume will ultimately determine its fate.
