RE: SLS Tonight: AD Tom Bowen
Folks, just shaking my head here........when has our school EVER had a better AD than Tom Bowen? Most of the past ADs that come to mind over the years have either been an embarrassment, couldn't complete a sentence speaking publically, had no knowledge of what the job really entailed, hired ineffective cronies, lied or abused the school financially. Aside from personalities, Bowen has developed accountability in the budget & made good hires - and more $$ has been raised for the Memphis athletics programs during his tenure than any previous point in the school's history. Who has done better?

Well said - I agree. Leadership can only do so much - fans have to do their part.

I agree Blue. Never been a Bowen fan.

Was a Bowen fan, then I interacted with him, I would rather keep Pastner at this point...

Some folks would rather be buddies with the AD or the coach than the AD or coach do a good job.

It was Larry who insisted on signing the paperwork at the hot dog stand. RC took a lot of heat for years about that but Larry's friends confirmed Larry wanted to go ahead and sign it, get it over with.

This is true. The negotiations were all complete Larry just needed to sign the paperwork. RIP, Larry. "No doubt about it"

Yes, I am convinced if Bowen had been hear 15-20 years ago, he would have gotten the football program turned around, which would have made our entire athletic program better.

What's the problem with Bowen, seriously? I know nothing about the man other than he's pushed football as a priority. Is your beef that he's let things slide on the basketball side?

I agree whole heartedly with pushing football as a priority. I just don't think he is good at doing it. If you have ever sat in a meeting with him, you know he does not behave in a way that is conducive to winning friends or influencing people. And I know I am not the only person to have an unpleasant interaction in this setting. So, while my beef is 100% personal it is also not an isolated occurrence.

Football got pushed. He was there for the ride.

At San Jose State, he was the axe man--8 or 9 head coaches he fired in 8 years. I think this says more about the personality of a man than people wanna admit.

But we are where we are right now.
Mike Norvell -- I have a reasonably strong feeling he will pull it off here. lol.

Basketball is just gonna struggle until further notice. Sorry. I'm not sure what any AD can do about that right at the moment. Fire him. I've never heard of that in the middle of the year...but I'm all for making history.

I've heard that stat before - about the firing of the coaches. Have you ever gone back and looked at it?

Let's talk about the big 2 sports - football and men's basketball - since those are the 2 that make the money and the ones that drive the bus/trolley.

In football at SJSU, Bowen fired one coach. The coach he inherited had won a total of 14 games in 4 years, and landed the program on probation. Bowen fired him. The new coach won 25 games over the next 5 years, then retired. So Bowen hired 2 football coaches in 8 years - and only 1 was a firing.

In basketball, Bowen fired one coach. The coach he inherited had won a total of 19 games in 3 years, and had 2 DUI's, along with an altercation with a fan at a road game. The replacement coach stayed through Bowen's tenure.

So the man fired 2 coaches over 8 years in football and basketball. Is that really out of the norm at SJSU? To compare, look at the 4 years before Bowen got there, and the 4 years since he left. Over those 8 years, other AD's at SJSU have fired 3 coaches in fb and bb.

Now he may have canned the heck out of volleyball and soccer coaches - I'm not going there. But this narrative about him struggling with coaching relationships seems a stretch. I heard it too, from athletic department staffers at Memphis worried about their jobs when he came on board. Now I think it may be more of an accountability thing, and that he's not a politician like RC was.

We actually hired RC a year before Louisville hired Tom Jurich. One can only wonder what would have happened to both schools if we had hired Jurich instead.

Would love to hear a recap.

He needs to cover what he's planning to do about men's bb.

Totally asinine comment. That is something an AD does not address in mid season.

I think there will come a time when egos and personalities clash between him and some boosters. The way people interact in California and/or New York is different than the way they interact in the south.

This is what someone told me he said re: Pastner at the SLS event:

"Tom Bowen basically blamed Shirley Raines. They could pay him the $10 mil or work out a settlement. Last night Bowen said he's ours so we have to give him the support to win."
