Was a Bowen fan, then I interacted with him, I would rather keep Pastner at this point...
What's the problem with Bowen, seriously? I know nothing about the man other than he's pushed football as a priority. Is your beef that he's let things slide on the basketball side?
I agree whole heartedly with pushing football as a priority. I just don't think he is good at doing it. If you have ever sat in a meeting with him, you know he does not behave in a way that is conducive to winning friends or influencing people. And I know I am not the only person to have an unpleasant interaction in this setting. So, while my beef is 100% personal it is also not an isolated occurrence.
Football got pushed. He was there for the ride.
At San Jose State, he was the axe man--8 or 9 head coaches he fired in 8 years. I think this says more about the personality of a man than people wanna admit.
But we are where we are right now.
Mike Norvell -- I have a reasonably strong feeling he will pull it off here. lol.
Basketball is just gonna struggle until further notice. Sorry. I'm not sure what any AD can do about that right at the moment. Fire him. I've never heard of that in the middle of the year...but I'm all for making history.
I've heard that stat before - about the firing of the coaches. Have you ever gone back and looked at it?
Let's talk about the big 2 sports - football and men's basketball - since those are the 2 that make the money and the ones that drive the bus/trolley.
In football at SJSU, Bowen fired one coach. The coach he inherited had won a total of 14 games in 4 years, and landed the program on probation. Bowen fired him. The new coach won 25 games over the next 5 years, then retired. So Bowen hired 2 football coaches in 8 years - and only 1 was a firing.
In basketball, Bowen fired one coach. The coach he inherited had won a total of 19 games in 3 years, and had 2 DUI's, along with an altercation with a fan at a road game. The replacement coach stayed through Bowen's tenure.
So the man fired 2 coaches over 8 years in football and basketball. Is that really out of the norm at SJSU? To compare, look at the 4 years before Bowen got there, and the 4 years since he left. Over those 8 years, other AD's at SJSU have fired 3 coaches in fb and bb.
Now he may have canned the heck out of volleyball and soccer coaches - I'm not going there. But this narrative about him struggling with coaching relationships seems a stretch. I heard it too, from athletic department staffers at Memphis worried about their jobs when he came on board. Now I think it may be more of an accountability thing, and that he's not a politician like RC was.
