Here's what I think the MAC ought to do - first, throw out the deadwood. There's too many schools that don't really bring anything to the conference. Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Central Michigan, Bowling Green, you're out. I think Miami is more of a hockey school and really should find a conference that fits. We also know that Akron is going bankrupt and won't be able to support sports well, so they're out too.

I would start to look at southern schools, because that's where the demographics are going. I'd try to snag the Florida Atlantic/Florida International pair, Florida would be good to have schools for football recruiting. Southern Mississippi, Rice, and Louisiana Tech. would expand to new states. I think Marshall would be a big addition, but I think we'd have to push Ohio out to get them.

I'd think we also need to push into the eastern markets, so Old Dominion and Charlotte might be good targets. There's been political issues between ODU and Buffalo, so I think we'd need to let Buffalo go

We should also try to expand southwest a bit, and I think Texas San Antonio, UTEP, and North Texas would get the MAC a lot of interest from the big football market in Texas.

I'd think the northern MAC school also will hurt the baseball side of things, so Toledo and Western Michigan should be let go too. The schools we picked up won't like March baseball roadtrips to Western or Toledo.

Then looking around for other good opportunities, Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee are really stronger schools than, say, Ball State, and Northern Illinois, so I'd swap those out.

So the new MAC would look like:
Florida Atlantic
Florida International
Old Dominion
Charlotte
Marshall
Western Kentucky
Middle Tennessee

and a western division:
Southern Mississippi
Louisiana Tech
Rice
UTEP
North Texas
Texas/San Antonio

And when Alabama Birmingham comes back on-line, we might look at them too.

This should be discussed at length. I'd be interested in hearing all the reasons for NDSU to join the MAC, then a vigorous rebuttal by MAC fans. Who can put together 15 paragraphs about this in one post?

At which point we, uh, then, what?

This seems to be a bunch of football leagues ... I seriously think several of your leagues with more basketball pedigree (your Big 10, your AAC) would likely look a lot different if BB pedigree were more seriously considered, as the current B12 and current AAC are much deeper BB leagues than FB leagues, even though each has very strong FB teams at the top.

For example ... It would take a lot more than Iowa State to get Kansas to move its BB to the MAC, even thought its FB would fit in quite well.

Yes, it's a football only reDo of the conferences considering competitive balance and geography. Rewarding NDSU the MAC, NIU the Big12 (now Big10), and penalyzing Kansas and Purdue etc. Some teams didn't make the cut for not being competitive enough. I could have put Kent somewhere but I didnt see a fit. Same with EMU. This isn't realistic just a fun mashup to bring the SEC down to the middle, make the Big12 (old Big10 make more sense), spice up CUSA making it an expansive conference, and keeping the ACC a coastal conference.

I'd look at the Big Sky.

With Idaho joining that conference its upgrading strength.

Unfortunately the SBC has decided against FB-Only memberships, the only route NDSU has of getting into FBS.
