Troy Caupain and the Cincinnati Bearcats are not about to overlook underdog Tulane in their next basketball game Sunday, given what happened when the Green Wave last visited UC.
“They’re going to give us their best punch,” Caupain said. “It never fails.”
Tulane beat the Bearcats 50-49 on a buzzer-beating, 30-foot shot by guard Jonathan Stark on Feb. 14, 2015 at Fifth Third Arena.
UC beat Tulane two weeks later in New Orleans (63-47) and eventually reached the NCAA Tournament, but the Bearcats have not forgotten their shocking home loss to the Green Wave.
“I remember that,” UC senior forward Shaq Thomas said. “On Valentine’s Day, too.”
UC (14-6, 4-3 American Athletic Conference comes off of a 76-72 home win against Memphis on Thursday.
Noteworthy:
-Junior point guard Caupain scored a career high 25 points to lead UC over Memphis. Thomas matched his career high with 18 points.
-Stark, a then-sophomore whose shot won the game for Tulane at UC last season, has since transferred to Murray State.
-Tulane (8-12, 1-6 AAC) was picked by league coaches to finish last in the 11-team conference. Entering the weekend, only East Carolina (0-6) and South Florida (0-7) trail Tulane in the league race.
-Tulane is led by 6-3 senior guard Louis Dabney, who averages 13.1 points. LSU transfer Malik Morgan (6-4 junior guard) averages 11.1 points, and 6-8 sophomore forward Dylan Osetkowski averages 10.5 points.
