Remember this? 05-stirthepot

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/...ng-sources

Quote:Last month, ESPN matched an offer made by NBC Sports Network and was awarded the Big East's media rights. Because ESPN is the primary rights holder, it was able to retain the conference's media rights simply by matching the league's best offer.

The seven-year deal included a stipulation that it could be terminated if the league lost two more schools, sources said. ESPN could only match NBC Sports Network's deal and not change the language of the contract, sources said.

NBC Sports Network's contract divided the league into Group A (Connecticut, Cincinnati, Houston and Temple) and Group B (the remaining members), sources said.

The media rights deal can be terminated if either two Group A schools leave or one Group A and one Group B school leave. If two Group B schools leave, the contract will be renegotiated, sources said.

The same group A. The contract is still in effect.

Ironically espn was willing to pay $10 million to ucf to be the 10th team in the Big East. NBC thinks we are 2nd class. Glad we are with the mouse now. 04-cheers

Next few years will be interesting with the mix of cord cutting and competition for AAC inventory. ESPN going to shell out more to keep us? Not sure what would go on espnu or espnnews without us.

Exactly. The language of the contract was not allowed to be changed.

With Navy and ECU now in this league the group A B thang goes out the window. Meaning, the AAC is much stronger with these two strong additions (No offense Tulane fans) that if any two current members were to depart, the strength of this league will still be sexy competitive enough for the eye test.

The moment the AAC began significantly outperforming expectations (showing stability, getting solid ratings, winning BCS/CFP bowls, winning a national basketball championship, etc), was the moment the contract clause referenced in the OP became irrelevant. ESPN isn't going to cancel the contract or try to reduce its value because the contract is already well below market. Why would they cancel a deal that's a fantastic and economical value for them? Well, they wouldn't. Worse case is they would require us to add 2 replacements to replace the lost inventory.

This.

...which is why I would favor an expansion, in a position of strength. If we're ever going to go hard after Air Force, now is the time. While the MWC is playing themselves in bowls, sending their champion to play our #6, and giving so much more money to Boise than everyone else, the AAC had a banner year, with 4 teams battling it out in the Top 25 down the stretch, and winning the Peach Bowl. Don't think all that added exposure Navy received was lost on Air Force. I would be on the phone with Air Force and Colorado State right now (or Air Force and Army). Create even more separation by dealing the MWC a severe blow.
