SMU Transfer Keith Frazier has committed to North Texas
This is big for the Mean Green. They are one of the youngest teams this season and will have a solid duo in Combs and Frazier next year.

Can't believe this thread hasn't gotten more traction. Getting a 5 star player in CUSA, even as a transfer, is extremely rare.

We NT fans are just beaten down from the last couple of years of FB and BB.
Here is the problem. All most fans can remember is that Benford inherited a very talented team from Johnny Jones (who took LSU job). This team included Tony Mitchell who came in with more fanfare than Frazier. That team was considered to be a top-20 sleeper. Instead, they finished under .500 in one of the most disappointing NT seasons ever. From the fans perspective, if Benford failed with Mitchell, what will he do to Frazier ?
Benford very well may have caused Tony Mitchell to slip out of the 1st round of the NBA draft, at least from a fan's perspective standpoint.
Benford has recruited pretty well. But, he hasn't been able to hang onto the players or develop them. Again, that is the perception with the fans.
Personally, I don't know what to think about Benford. If Frazier came to play for Benford and not NT, then you can't really fire him after this year, can you ?

You fire him regardless. There is no other program in the country that would allow a coach back after 4 seasons with a record like his.

I say give him one more year with Frazier. Combs will be a year older and likely a pre-season CUSA first team player. The current North Texas roster is by no means void of talent. What they need is a player like Frazier to boost the overall morale and they could be in for a special season next year. If next year is another failure, can Benford because it's not likely Frazier will transfer again unless he gets another waiver.

Problem is that Benford is in the last year of his 5 year deal next year. If he had two more, giving him another year to get it together might work.

Mitchell was a 5 star 1st round NBA draft pick when he arrived and joined a successful UNT program. Benford led that team nowhere. Under Benford, Mitchell didn't develop, and saw his draft status drop. He returned for his senior year. Again UNT didn't live up to expectations, and Mitchell didn't develop. So, our last 5 star NBA lottery pick fell into the second round. Now, UNT is far from the successful program Johnny Jones left when he went to LSU.
In truth, Benford never should have returned for this season. If you look at our attendance, it would appear many fans agree.
Don't get me wrong, I'm very glad to have Frazier. I just hope he is ready to play for a new coach. If we didn't have to boot McCarney, we would probably have a new basketball coach already.

Frazier has 1/2 half year left to play, right? He basically got SMU on probation and has a reputation of being someone who didn't belong in college to begin with, and has had lots of help to stay eligible. Maybe that's all incorrect, but if any of that latter stuff is true, UNT should not be applauded for taking him in. If that's the case, I think Frazier should try to turn pro instead of playing half a year of college ball.

Speaking on Benford, have y'all seen the photo that comes up for him on google as his default bio picture? His face on the Hindenburg. Pretty awesome.
