I got the feeling he was that kind of guy from his introduction. Really seems like a stand up guy.
Really impressed with what they've done so far. They are certainly approaching it the right way.

Does anyone know his feelings about redshirts? We know Withers was against them, but I had not heard Houston's feelings about them.

Interesting question. He might not have much experience with the red shirt issue given his background. Looking back, EW's stance makes more sense when you consider the short time frame he was likely anticipating.

What EW said and did were two different things. He said he didn't intend to redshirt anyone, but that wasn't really the case. He redshirted quite a few guys. And before everyone goes wild about Tutt, Branch, Moreland, and a few others, I know he did play some true freshman. But, it wasn't really as dramatic as his statement.

Bryce Maginley QB/ATH 6'2 215lbs - Charlotte, NC
Offers from Coastal Carolina, Florida A&M, Western Carolina, Citadel, Tenn St

Dorrius Rodgers DT 6'3 290lbs - Locust Grove, GA
Offers from Citadel, Furman, Mercer (Currently committed to Mercer)

Adam Smith DB 6'1 170 lbs - Charlotte, NC
Offers from Army, Citadel, Gardner Webb, Western Carolina

Based on the Twitter feeds this weekend; it sounds like we may have gotten commits from all 3 of these guys. Way to go coaches. Go Dukes!

The Hudl website lists Rodgers running a 4.76 40. ESPN lists him at 5.76. That's probably more accurate. Still, he's got good size and is strong.

5.76 would be relatively STATIONARY. He had some quick bursts in his videos which is of the utmost importance for a DT. If he is 4.76 at that size he would be a nice get.

there you go.

LOL Pretty sure 5.76 is erroneous. From someone who has evaluated speed as a sprint coach for over 20 years, my observation is he is closer to 4.76

True. But I doubt JMU would get within sniffing distance of a 290 lb HS player running a "legit" 4.76...Must be one of those special high school 40 yd dashes where a couple of tenths get added on when a player arrives in college.

Typical high school "time"....shades of a handheld. A 4.76 for a DT would have been bettered by but ONE player at last years NFL Combine. Even if you call him a DE ( which his body type does not suggest), his time would still be in the top third of draft worthy DEs.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this commit- Anthony Womack- cornerback from the Virginia Beach area. Looks like he has interest from several BCS teams including Virginia, Wisconsin and Va Tech.

Watched him play against my boys in the Beach District for the past few years- great talent with excellent skills- is more than a solid replacement for the kid who flipped to Texas St

No JMU would not get a player like that. He is more likely 5.1 to 5.3ish which would be decent given his size. At one of the GA HS's I coached at, I had two running backs that wanted to run track tell me that they ran 4.5's. I timed them twice and they both ran 4.9's both times and they freaked out. HS football 40 times in many cases are off by .2-.5 (or more) especially if done by the HS team. Nike Camp's, etc. might be a little closer. I coached an electric timed 10.71 100 meter kid that ran 4.42 at an Atlanta Nike camp (4th out of about 500 athletes). There really aren't that many "legit" 4.5 or under HS kids out there.

Well, there was no public edict by JB saying they would be honored. Live and learn. JB may well have said it to Houston privately, or not. Nice to start fresh with no controversy, though.

Two thoughts on the 40 time discussion:

There was a Nike ad like 10 years ago (definitely before 2007) that featured DeAngelo Hall. It stated When did you know that you were going to be good (or special or something)? Hall - "When I went to a VT recruiting camp and ran the fastest 40 time there. I was only 15." I just always loved that ad for some reason.

None of these 40 time lies by high schoolers compare to when a famous JMU return man place a 5 lb dumbbell in the drawstring of his shorts prior to stepping on the scale for weights going into the media guide.

EDIT: Not sure why but I never looked up the guy's official weight before. Well his first three years at JMU he gained 5 lbs BUTTT he suddenly gained 15 lbs going into his 4th year and 10 more in his 5th year. HAHAHA I love it!

I am impressed by the work that went into producing the video vignettes on each of the signees. Lots of coordinating in preparing those spots for NLI signing day and getting them posted without snags. Very well-done.

Not sure if that video interview format was a parting gift from EW, but I doubt Houston had much time to have had anything to do with the formatting. None-the-less, EW or not, it was far superior presentation of the new recruits to listening to MM ramble on about each player. I'm also sure the player's family, friends and HS coaches are paying attention to how JMU highlighted and welcomed their son/former player.

The majority of our commitments took their official visits over the last two weeks and I believe they were filmed on the visit so Withers wasn't here. I'm guessing it was spearheaded by athletics communication.
