RE: De-Commits some succeed some fail
Here are the decommits since 2012 that I am aware of. There were probably others.

2012

RB Devin Church - To Illinois where he played little and then to EIU where he started last fall.
WR Tre Parmelee - To Kansas where he didn't do much until last fall when he caught 41 balls.

2013

WR Tommy Fuessel - To Northwestern where he was one and done due to injury.
QB Mitch Kimble - To Syracuse where he played a few games as a feshman and then to EIU where he has not played yet.
DB Corey Winfield - To Syracuse where he starts.
LB Ben Neimann - To Iowa where he starts.

2014

WR Cortez Lewis - To Wake Forest where he is their top receiver.
DB Juwan Dowels - To Syracuse where he starts.
OL Jacob Maxwell - To Wisconsin where he starts.
Bearooz Yacoobi - To Purdue where he is a backup so far.

2015

DB Herbert Miller - To FAU where he starts.
QB/LB/RB Alec Ingold - To Wisconsin where he played some RB last fall.
WR Richie Cooper - To Akron where he caught 6 balls as a freshman.
LB Joe Riggins - To Utah State where he redshirted last fall.

2016

Jahcour Pearson - To parts unknown.

Lost some VERY GOOD players off that list, especially that 2014 class.

now I know why other teams are poaching our verbals. Lots of decent players.

He gave Indiana a verbal then signed with us.

The premise of this thread was verbal commits to NIU that left for other schools prior to signing. He verbaled Indiana not us.

That depends on the definition of success. If asked, maybe Miles Osei would disagree saying "Maybe I wasn't a featured player, but I got a degree, varsity letters and the experience of playing in the Big Ten. I had a great experience in Champaign, partied, got laid and made connections that I'm convinced will help me in the future."
Same as if someone asked Jordan Lynch, if you had to do it over again and it was a Big Ten scholarship from Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern or Purdue, would you take that over NIU? I'd hope he'd say: "I played for coaches who appreciated my work ethic and talent, I doubt I would have been a Heisman finalist anywhere but at NIU. I got my degree, played in the Orange Bowl, a lot of great experiences, partied, got laid, and made a lot of friends and connections that I'm convinced will help me in the future. ..... Maybe I wish not to have believed the Bears would do more than use me for good pr."

Except the difference is, speaking strictly from a football perspective, Lynch wins in your scenario. Besides, you can party and get laid at NIU too.
