Would love to have seen him stay on at UT as a QB coach. I could see him be a very successful coach in the future and would do great things for UT as a recruiter. His story of going big time and then transferring to UT and having success is one that a lot of kids need to hear.

Is there any chance he gets a shot at the pros? If not, is there any chance we could bring him on the coaching staff? I agree he has the potential to be a great coach and could be great for our University.

I also think that Ely would make a great QB coach. IMO Ely mental football skills were way above average----his knowledge of defenses gave him the ability to make reads quickly at the LOS and therefore good decisions about the proper play as well as the ability in passing plays to make his progressions quickly and therefore get rid of the ball much faster than most QBs.

In that regard, I suspect that although most of the OL returns in tact (except for Carter), next year the QB (presumably Woodside) will take a lot more sacks than Ely did.

You make a good point. Ely's mental game always impressed me and I probably got a little too focused on it at the expense of the physical side of the game. There is no question that Woodside (and Julian) are both more elusive and have a better run game than Ely which obviously makes getting sacks more difficult for the opposing defense.

Still, the number of sacks surrendered this year was simply unbelievably few and I can not imagine having back to back years with those same kind of unrealistically low numbers.

In any event I expect that the offense will likely be even better next year than it was this year so, barring any serious injuries, the offense should be truly formidable.

In my opinion whether 2016 is great season or merely a good season will depend on how well the new faces on the defense can step up to provide both the quality and depth that we saw on that unit in 2015 and, of course, how well the new coaching staff comes together to get the job done.
