Heavy on JC recruits
Seems our new staff us taking the JC players route on recruits for this class. I just hope that we balance this with some talented HS players as well. If I remember correctly didn't AZ State rely on JC players a lot? I am impressed with the talent he is bringing in but I hope we do not overlook the development too.

RE: Heavy on JC recruits
If we keep all th JC commitments and sign this visiting in Jan, the total will be 7. CJF averaged 6-7 each class as well. The key is managing scholly load by class year. Meaning you don't want to lose 30 SR when you can only sign 25. CJF and CMN also looked at bring in JC's with 3 yrs of eligibility. My hunch is we'll be a little JC heavy this year due to short time to recruit.

You also have to look at that most of these juco players are on defense. I think CMN saw in practice and in the bowl game we don't have much talent on defense. So he's trying to bring in talented players that can play now. because unless we have some stars that redshirted last year our defense is depleted.

The 4 midyear JC enrollees also count against the 2015 class. Curious if we pick up 1 or 2 5th year players from ASU looking for more P.T.

Remember, he came in during the JC signing period. We'll know more over the next few months about his recruiting

The juco system out west is very strong and the FB is very strong. We've pulled some good ones through the years. I'm fine with 6-8 this year.

RE: Heavy on JC recruits
They recruited a lot of JCs at AZST.

He just hired a JC DC to the staff.

I expect to always recruit JCs.

Excellent point you both make. Thanks for your response and perspective.

RE: Heavy on JC recruits
I am under the impression that relying on JC players is more common in the PAC 12 than elsewhere. USC and UCLA have long depended heavily upon them, partly because junior college football in California is pretty good.

RE: Heavy on JC recruits
Looking at the numbers:
  • This year we graduated 14 players + Lynch + a transfer.
  • Next year, we will graduate 28 players.
  • The following year, we will graduate 28 more players + any Jucos that we sign this year.
  • We could graduate as many as 36 seniors after the 2017 season.
  • 4 of our Freshman played extensively and 13 redshirted.

  • The website lists 13 walk-ons however, I suspect more.
  • We had an additional 9 players that have seen the field (including special teams) 3 times or less.

RE: Heavy on JC recruits
After spending the last couple of hours exploring the interwebz, Memphis still has offers out to several high profile JC players that are giving us serious consideration. OL, LB, DE and SS types, I could see as many as 4 or 5 more JC signings if they come through.

We can still get them in school even if they visit next weekend, some cannot attend until summer.

And yes, our new coach seems to not be backing down to any other school in the country on players he wants. He is also already making 2017 offers to some very good players that seem interested and tweeting about a Memphis offer.

CMN is also trying flip some quality players committed to other schools. Give them hell Coach.

Are JUCO's easier to recruit than HS kids? My assumption is that there are several schools out there who think Juco's may be beneath them?

RE: Heavy on JC recruits
you want to use JCs as a stop gap and not rely on them every year.

Depends on the school and how many you are signing IMO.

For G5, JCs are almost an imperative.

Tommy West had two bum QBs in a row - that's about all it takes to get your fired unless you're Alabama and can put 5 stars at every other position.

Hankins woulda been better if he had gotten to throw something besides a sideline screen.

Once Fichtner left, Tommy should've brought in Mumme at OC with Hankins at QB.

I think two things did in TW well before recruiting too many JCs did - internal promotions to OC and DC instead of hiring outside guys with better experience and poor QB play the last few teams he fielded.

Tommy got a big raise but his assistants didn't get jack squat. Fichtner saw the writing on the wall and bolted
