How can UNLV not win year after year?
You would think VEGAS could recruit itself? Will always baffle me.

RE: How can UNLV not win year after year?
Why doesn't Hawai'i and in turn how does secondary small state school and remotely located Boise State win every year?

There's obviously more to it than that.

I assume the OP is referring to football. They haven't put any money into hiring and keeping a good coach. If they did, they'd be ideal travel partners with BYU.

Even if he's talking about basketball (they just fired their coach), there's more to it than having a hot location, otherwise at least one of Hawai'i, Miami, Arizona State, UNLV, St. John's, Georgetown, UCLA (the University of Hollywood) and Illinois-Chicago would win it every season.

Coaches recruit, not location, although location can be used by the coaches as a topic. UNLV basketball will be fine, there is a great disparity between their football and basketball programs.

RE: How can UNLV not win year after year?
Good question - possible reasons:

1. Nevada not a strong high school football state
2. Would need to get players from California and the entire Pac 12 recruits California hard
3. No history
4. Don't have the big money boosters to provide the special benefits that make king programs run

Whose mother wants their 17/18 year old son moving to Sin City?

More importantly, who would want to actually *live* in Vegas?

The mother isn't always making the choice.

There's nothing wrong with living in Vegas. Vegas isn't entirely composed of The Strip and while there's a gambling addict underclass, there's plenty of solid places to live far removed from The Strip. Most don't even think about The Strip unless they're going to see a show or have friends from out of town coming.

As a professional poker player, I would have no issue with living in Vegas...

You would after you went broke within a few weeks. They don't build those luxury resorts by letting many people win (they build them in part by charging people $17 for a tube of M&M's).

I spend much more money living in Boston than I ever would in Vegas...

Sure you would. The place is rigged for gauging, especially of the lazy (i.e. those who will buy overpriced hotel items as opposed to doing some walking to places with cheaper options). Not saying you're lazy but its hard not to overspend in a place designed for it, forgetting about the gambling aspect which is the main motivation to go there in the first place.

What's more to say than Vegas (especially The Strip) is a tourist trap set up to gauge people out of money, whether you gamble or not?

That's true...if you're a tourist (which I am not). All business when I'm in Vegas.

It's even worse while on business, you don't have as much time to do bargain shopping. If you find a way to avoid being gauged, then kudos to you.

Dude...I'm a professional poker player with sponsors. I don't pay for jack in Vegas.
