One more guy ...
I'm on record as saying that Markel is our best NBA prospect, while also realizing that he has plenty to prove. This was before Lawson arrived on campus, obviously Dedric is the best pro prospect on the team now...
I'm also on record as saying that I think this team is actually pretty close to be good. I just think we need one more guy to step up! We have a solid "Big 3", if you will... Shaq, Dedric, and Tarrant are high-level players & they play like it. You can basically count on them to come through on MOST nights. However, we need one more guy to step up to get us over the hump & IMO that guy needs to be Markel. He already defends and rebounds well for his position, but he hasn't mad e a 3 all year long. He's not taking many either. There's room for improvement from him on the offensive side, think he needs to look for his shot and get to the basket more often. If we can get him to go from 7 ppg to 11-12 ppg then I think this team can be really scary.
I know that sounds crazy, but he's talented enough to do that. Things just have to start falling his way. He works hard and puts himself in good positions now, sooner or later he'll catch a break. This is a guy who shot the ball very well for an extended stretch last year.
Having 2 scoring guards and 2 good bigs can put us in a position to win the AAC, especially with SMU being out. You may think that's crazy (probably is) but this league isn't that good...we COULD do it. If one more guy steps up!

I agree. We are also short on post depth. Either post player gets in foul trouble the game is over. Need some outside scoring to open up the floor to be able to drive. Markel and Woodsen are our only hope I think there?

RE: One more guy ...
Two major issues:
1. Depth this year in the frontcourt is a killer particularly with KJ out. If Shaq or Dedric go out we have to sub in Marshall, who has played okay in spurts or go small.
2. Shooting - has been better lately maybe it's starting to come around.
This team does play hard and doesn't give up like some other teams in the past but it still hasn't got people talking about them yet. Defense is also really good except for some of the lapses.

Markel is 0-9 for the year from 3. Tarrant started off terrible but has gone 14-29 in his last 7 games (48.2%). Dedric seems to be shooting that top of the key three pretty well too.

Seems like we've been saying outside shooter for years now, but I'm down with Markel getting his turn.

Markel sees the floor better and he plays defense, I guess he's earned a few shots? If we don't get some outside scoring to open the floor up, big physical slowdown teams are going to be hard for us to beat.

Markel reminds me of the Antonio Anderson and Geron Johnson type players of the past ... don't think he is there yet, but he does have a great mental toughness about him. What is his FT % ... from the last game, I think he missed quite a few. Anyways, yea, crazy that his 3-ball isn't falling.

Markel needs his own Josh Pastner like Bibby had - a guy to wake him up early and make him stay in the gym late, rebounding as he shoots and shoots and shoots.
I remember reading an article on Jeremy Hunt and the summer before his senior year, he shot 1500 jumpers a DAY.
That kind of work pays off. He was a really nice shooter by the end of his career.

Yes. He was pretty automatic and a bit better than a streaky shooter.
The dragon 3 is still in my mind.

I was hoping the One More Guy would be Burrell. But he's running out of time.

Markel is a lot like Jeff Greene from the Grizzlies. He is either really good or really bad on a given day. His defense is always pretty solid. As of 3 games ago our +/- was not great with him in the game

Markel made IMO the key play the other night. I believe we were down 5 and he rebounded a late clock 3 from the corner and dunked it. All that was forgot after the crazy stuff in the last 30 seconds

Markel sill not take threes. Maybe he has taken a few this season, I did not check the stats, but he bypasses wide open threes a lot in order to drive. Would not be the worst thing to pop an open one or two...but clearly he is coached...determined to drive.
After Woodson and Tarrant we are thin on shooters. Burrell or Dedric will hit one every now and then, but that is about it.

9.9 ppg(4th on team) and 6.6 rpg (3rd on team) what more do you want from him?

Except for being 0-9 from 3 he is still our best shooting guard. (.459) And third best shooting % on the team (Shaq and Martin) this year. Just not taking the shots he would have taken last year. Shot selection could be the reason for his increased shooting %

RE: One more guy ...
Markel doesn't appear to have confidence in his jump shot from either side of the arc. He passes up wide open shots that I would like to see him take. Of course, if he misses, I'll be thinking "why is he shooting???". I like his hustle and toughness just need him to take and make some of the jumpers he passes on.
As for Burrell, I'd like him to reign in his mouth a bit. He seems to let his emotions get the better of him. When he's going to dunk a ball, take it up with two hands.
I'd echo what others have said, we need a shooter.
