Fan etiquette
I just asked this in another thread, but it was buried pretty deeply. What are the "rules" regarding standing and yelling at a game? We were at the Birmingham Bowl and an obnoxious Memphis fan (looked just like Andy Samberg in a black leather coat) wouldn't give it a rest. I don't think he was drunk or particularly vulgar, but he was LOUD and PERSISTENT. The lady in front of him was an Auburn fan and after a while, she turned around and told him to shut up. I've been asked to sit once before myself, so what are the real rules? What does the price of the ticket entitle you to? I say if you go to a game, you have to assume you are going to be exposed to some yelling, maybe a little cursing, maybe a snide remark from an opposing fan...its part of it. At the same time, I suppose your right to be an ass can't infringe on someone else's right to enjoy the game that they also bought a ticket to. Are there hard and fast rules concerning this?

RE: Fan etiquette
you must not go to many of our basketball games. The blue hairs look unfavorably upon standing for more than a few seconds.

On a related note, This season has really sucked for us - thanks to the decline in attendance, a grade A ******* and his woman sit behind us for the season. Cussing, stupid comments, screaming and whistling across the court - not at the game, but for their friends to notice them.

We used to know every single person around us. Not so much anymore (for the seats that are still ocupado).

Oh I get it. The blue hairs hate people standing in front of them. Thats why I'm asking what the rules are. When and why would you have to sit or have to shut up? If you are drunk or cursing etc I get it, but if you are sober and not vulgar, when is it too much?

Fan etiquette, like recruiting, is fluid.

If you are the only one standing...sit down.

RE: Fan etiquette
I had an similar experience at the Birmingham bowl with an Auburn fan. If I clapped or cheered in any way, the Auburn fan would turn around and scold me. If it's a Sporting Event as long as you aren't being vulgar (especially in front of children) I think it's fine.

I have a "blue hair" in front of me that stands waaay too much. He stands when the crowd is not loud, and no one is standing in front of him. He just wants us to get a good look at his back.

IMO, follow the crowd. Sit when you can see. Stand when you can't.

In a close game in the last 2 minutes there are no rules

Maybe he works his gluts and just wants you to notice.

Actually in close down to the wire games like last night, I notice the entire lower bowl, the blue hairs as we like to say, are standing while upstairs in the blue collar seats where I am, we pretty much remain seated.

Didn't notice, I was standing up with my eyes glued on the game. The blue hairs sit behind me

IMO if you want to sit and watch then stay home, don't get mad at someone who is standing and cheering. I've been told at the forum in the student section during big games to sit down and I just ignore them

RE: Fan etiquette
Especially when both school's fans are present, it is annoying but hard to decide who is right. At the Ole Miss game at the Liberty bowl this year we had 3-4 Mississippi fans standing and drinking and yelling in front of us. What are you going to do? Of course, later in the game we were standing and yelling and I heard an Ole Miss guy behind us tell his family, "this is a disaster." Then they left.

Stand if you want, but if you are just doing it to be obnoxious, better be ready for your surrounding peers to put you in your place.

When I go to road games I stand and become obnoxious as possible, best results have been at UAB and Southern Miss.

RE: Fan etiquette
It's annoying when I bring my kids to a game (10, 8, 4) and the people in front of us stand the whole time (basketball or football.) None of my kids can see, even if they stand themselves. In my opinion, stand up when it's appropriate (i.e. a big play just happened, it's a crucial moment in the game, etc.) Standing during a time out or commercial break is unnecessary. I know it's a chain reaction sometimes when the lower rows stand it causes all others to stand so they can see. There were three people in front of us at the Birmingham bowl that literally stood the entire game, including halftime. Many times they were the only ones standing anywhere in our section. I thought they'd get the clue, but they were too stupid or just didn't care.

RE: Fan etiquette
It would be nice if the crowd (students in particular) would help the players out with a shot clock countdown around 7 seconds when the ball is still beyond the arc.

For a program with "very knowledgeable" fans, we miss the mark here.

I stand at this time every game as it me a chance to stretch and not interfere with anyone's enjoyment during the actual game.
Different strokes for different

Hmmm, I wonder if the blue hairs are the same ones that were at The Coliseum in the 80s? Or They Pyramid in the 90s?

i hear you. i gave up my tickets in the upper deck years ago because i had to sit behind a guy who was about 6'4" and insisted on leaning forward the whole game. if you are a pauper like me and have to sit upstairs, you know what the view is like. you have to look down at the court. so, i could only see half the court at any given time. i had a better view at home on my big screen than i had on the jumbotron, and no $8 beers.

i gave up my season tix, and gave myself a nice raise at the same time. have not regretted it one minute. now the team has deteriorated to the competitive level i figured it was going to with the departure of Cal, so it all worked out in my favor.

side note: still a football season ticket holder going on 20 years. tiger fan for life....
