Emails, posters around campus, radio segments, pep rallys, hell anything to get these kids interested in coming to the convo. Remind the 21 and older crowd we serve beer now. Tap into the greek life and have frats and sororities make it an event to attend. I'd love to see the school more involved in actively recruiting kids to fill the convo. Especially with the team we have.

I saw Maric responded to a Toledo final score post on facebook, and encouraged people to come out and support the team. Was glad to see him call out the fans like that. Responding to a facebook post with "Great win Huskies!" is simply not enough.

First, the players go to class, they could be telling everyone to come watch them. Most students are all over social media. Unless you have you head buried in the sand, you should know they are doing well. More media will not decrease Apathy. It is sad. You only have 4-5 years in college, enjoy them. Then you get in to the real world.

It should not be the players responsibilities to recruit people to come to games. Their play on the court should be enough but as proven with football, that is never the case with NIU. The school needs to put more effort in recruiting additional patrons to the games because while they have tried, the extent is far not enough.

They are definitely reaching out to alumni, football season ticket holders, etc.. I received three emails in just the past week from IMG Learfield about basketball.

Apathy is problem. Unless you go to the dorms, force them to the game, they have other interests. If the students don't care about basketball, not gonna change their opinion with a lot of advertisements.

That's all well and good, but they should also be pushing FUTURE alumni. Who is more willing to go to an athletic event? A student who participated actively during their time at NIU and remembers the sports fondly and wishes to relive that experience, or someone who went to NIU but was too focused on everything besides sports but sees the team is hot now and thinks "hmmmm, maybe I'll check that out".

Bottom line, people should be doing far more than they are. Hell get student organizations more involved too. We should be averaging 3-4k, not barely 1000

And get the damn townies in here. Dekalb isn't THAT exciting in the winter, come watch your local team make a historic and get out of the cold. We can even sell you booze now! Not like you're blowing your money on the ticket price.

Bribe em. Make it extra credit, promote giveaways, offer students meal deals, "bring a friend/family/freaking townie" night. Anything to pack the place. You start filling it up, people have fun, maybe then they wanna come back. The students show up for concerts when i used to go there and it's SRO so i know they can get there. Just have to sweeten the pot for our stubborn student body.

First day of classes is the 19th so it would be hard but they should really try to e-blast the students on the 18th and 19th to get to that game. The game on the 22nd should be well attended by the students...well comparing to the attendance that past few years.

RE: I'd really like some heavy promotion to the students about our basketball team
Getting more fans to the Convo will take time - if it ever does happen. Just look at the success of our football team and the attendance in Huskie Stadium. There is a general overall apathy these days. Maybe people are getting lazier, other forms of entertainment all around (people prefer playing with their phones), or interest in college sports is dwindling. It could be a combination of factors. At least with basketball, you sit indoors in comfort - unlike football. Granted the weather to get to the game could be dicey, but that does not happen every game. IMO - as has always been my opinion - marketing by Athletics really needs to be ramped up.

They need to get this word out in force on social media, around campus however they can. Put it in the northern star, advertise it on the huskie bus windows and bus stop shelters. Hell have professors announce it at the beginning or end of classes, whatever it takes. More can be done and it isn't very expensive to do the things i just suggested...

This program was in the deepest circle of Hell not more than 2 years ago. It is going to take more than a couple MAC wins and a terrible OOC schedule to get any type of fan base excited again. If 2,000 fans show up, that is a win in my book.

Agree, in general. Especially with town, alumni.

But there should be at least a dramatic increase in students. When you win it goes up, lose it goes down.

How many students go to a game? 50? 100 at most? I have no idea. Heck, 4000 at a football game and people complain. Getting 400-500 students to attend with flyers in N. Star, dorms, campus buildings, bars and promotions can't be the hardest thing. Do they have apps for students?

I mean 14-2 is pretty impressive, no matter who you play.

Stay Cool,

When I went to NIU you didn't need to advertise or have promotions to get the students to attend the games. Of course the only media at the time was the Northern Star. For the most part we played games on Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons. With nothing else to do, student attendance was always good. Maybe it was because Chick Evans was right in the middle of campus and an easy walk for most everyone. Other than the fact that we have sucked for the last decade, it surprises me that there is very little student interest to watch a game, and no amount of promotion is going to change that.
