RE: Buzzfeed: 25 Reasons You Should Never Visit The South
When Americans discuss the American Civil War, Faulkner's quote from Requiem for a Nun rings more true than ever. The War is as polarizing today as it was 150 years ago.

"The past is never dead. It's not even past."

β€œIt's all now you see. Yesterday won't be over until tomorrow and tomorrow began ten thousand years ago. For every Southern boy fourteen years old, not once but whenever he wants it, there is the instant when it's still not yet two o'clock on that July afternoon in 1863, the brigades are in position behind the rail fence, the guns are laid and ready in the woods and the furled flags are already loosened to break out and Pickett himself with his long oiled ringlets and his hat in one hand probably and his sword in the other looking up the hill waiting for Longstreet to give the word and it's all in the balance, it hasn't happened yet, it hasn't even begun yet, it not only hasn't begun yet but there is still time for it not to begin against that position and those circumstances which made more men than Garnett and Kemper and Armistead and Wilcox look grave yet it's going to begin, we all know that, we have come too far with too much at stake and that moment doesn't need even a fourteen-year-old boy to think This time. Maybe this time with all this much to lose than all this much to gain: Pennsylvania, Maryland, the world, the golden dome of Washington itself to crown with desperate and unbelievable victory the desperate gamble, the cast made two years ago; or to anyone who ever sailed a skiff under a quilt sail, the moment in 1492 when somebody thought This is it: the absolute edge of no return, to turn back now and make home or sail irrevocably on and either find land or plunge over the world's roaring rim.”
― William Faulkner, Intruder in the Dust

One interesting thing is when you read historical accounts from the 1880s of people complaining that Atlanta was not "Southern enough" even back then. Maybe it's being a railroad town and the fact that people have been moving here for 120 years.

My relatives who left Atlanta back in the 80s had drawls.

I might be misreading you here, but are you saying a person isn't a southerner if their ancestors weren't in the South in the mid 1800s?

I'll hang up and listen

location of ancestors would not work for me as I had 19 in the various union armies and 19 in the south. my family came to virginia in the 1600's and slowly expanded westward until Indiana by around 1800..

The South fired first at an invading army. On Southern soil, in a State no longer a part of the Union. And with the exception of the brief and tragic Pennsylvania campaign, nearly the entire war was fought in the South. So, yes, it is the War of Northern Agression.

I recall someone debating Puerto Rican statehood and someone argued "If we do this there is no changing our mind later. It's forever. Ask the southern states in the civil war". The invading army line was funny. That's like me changing the locks on your house and then saying you "invaded" when you knock the door down. LMAO!

Fascinating....not. LOL. If you see the Civil War like the Pelopponessian War as in a long time ago and irrelevant to today then congrats. If you are still fighting it in your head and heart...yikes.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Panama. Why should we give a **** about any of this?

So say for some reason Japan attacks our base in Okinawa. Since our base is in their country it's justified?

The name "War of Northern Aggression" carries a few connotations with it, most of which reflect badly on Southerners. I wish it would go away forever.

I've always called it the War Between the States. That was the most common name used at the time (in both North and South), and it is completely neutral.

"War of Northern Aggression" is accurate but one-sided.

I have said "War of Northern Aggression" many times but not once was I serious. It's usually said to get a rise out of one of my yankee friends. If you have Civil War angst you are holding onto, it's time to let go.

I like the Asheville area and Cumberland island and Savannah .
Savannah is kinda rough though but its a cool town.
We live in Myrtle Beach great place to live tons of stuff to do.
I spend a lot of time in Charleston so I take it for granted North Charleston is pretty rough.

The best family vacation we took in the states .
Ludington ,Michigan beautiful area with rolling sand dunes and crystal clear water.
We rented dune buggies at Silver lake it was awesome.
We came back to South Carolina with sun burns.

Agreed.

I can sorta get the lineage ("heritage") thing, in some cases. But if you're using your great-great-great-grandpa's death by Union cannonball as a reason to go picketing for certain causes today, then please stop. You're giving people in our region a bad name.
