1. Because there is no legitimate evidence which shows in-person voter fraud is an issue and basic common sense dictates that it would do far more to disenfranchise people than it would to prevent illegitimate votes.

2. That the current ID system proposed by the GOP is far more rigorous than many of the examples you mentioned and is being don't for political purposes rather than common sense. If you don't have a photo ID you can still get on an airplane just an fyi.

Have you heard of gerrymandering? I hope you have because it was mentioned in the speech tonight.

jonnyZerO, do YOU have any idea how "gerrymandering" occurs? How it happens?

Do you know why? How some areas are actually being protected?

Lay down the Auntie Pinko and Mother Jones for a sec and actually read up for a change of pace. Might, might, do you some good. 03-thumbsup

I love listening to Obama particularly because he leaves the impression that all 300,000,000 in the country agree with him except the 300 Republicans in Congress who constantly thwart him. It's a certified hoot!

RE: No SOTU Thread?
I tend to watch when a president addresses the nation from the Oval Office, by himself.

But I can't make it through a whole SOTU with all the standing and clapping every 30 seconds.

Although the random camera shots are entertaining. I mean, really... How hard is it to go a whole hour without picking your nose, checking your phone, half-dozing off, etc. (I know, I know... the speeches can make one do that). But if I'm in the audience, I'm locked in and looking alert the whole time. Even if I'm daydreaming.

It's not as stupid of a comment as you think. You actually can indirectly gerrymander the Governorships, Senate, Presidency and the Supreme court, which is the GOP's ultimate strategy.

You gerrymander house districts to produce favorable republican (or democratic) districts. This produces 2 type of state legislators, those who can win elections to higher offices, old politicians and extremists(gay, socialists, minorities, racists, xenophobes, etc. ). One party slowly sees its future electable candidates diminish, while the other develops multiple options for House, Senate and Governorships. These people will become your next crop of presidential candidates.

If you look at the democratic side, they don't have many viable candidates after HRC. 2020 looks even worse should she lose in 2016. The democratic politicians in the south are minorities who can't win state wide (gerrymander districts). The dems in swing states are too old to seek higher office(Nelson, McCaskill, Levin) and the dems in the liberal states (California, Washington, Oregon etc.) have been in office for so long that they have not allowed new younger politicians to emerge. The dems are screwed if HRC doesn't win in 2016. Cuomo is their only hope.

I can not recall a SOTU speech where so few people were standing and clapping. Normally its about half the room or more, which can cause these speeches to be really long. This time it was pretty much his cabinet and a few liberals, which really didnt slow down his speech at all, because they really didnt make that much noise. And I really wouldnt call it a speech, he seemed to be winging it on a lot of stuff.
