RE: Ideas for increasing men's basketball attendance
Don't laugh but someone who know how could create a Facebook page for UAB fans. The goal would be to get as many casual fans, employees and facebook users to like UAB basketball.. and athletics in general.
The facebook or what ever social media used should be a fan page similar to Blazertalk so there can be no confusion as to it being driven by the fan.
I continue to be amazed that UAB employees and others who have a relationship with UAB take no ownership of the team...I know people who came to every CUSA TOURNAMENT GAME but didnt attend one regular season game. I believe the availability of their favorite alcohol beverage and the comfort zone effect may have played a part in the attendance at one and not the other.
Since alcoholic beverages will not be sold at UAB arena's concession stands anytime soon, we need to make the arena a welcoming comfortable environment....I believe that once the typical UAB employee leave work, they will not come back to the southside unless given a reason..
So lets have a UAB employee appreciation night, show your ID and get a discount or get in free or a buy one get one.. some how we have to win the employees and the community...Birmingham Team is just a slogan, catchy but lets put faces to the team, basketball players, cheerleaders, doctors, patients, policemen, plumbers, electricians, mailmen, the man on the street and the fans roaring at a UAB basketball game.

+1 - it was never really pushed or marketed right to get the casual fan to the game where we could win them over regardless of which sport they preferred.

make no mistake, "Bartow Magic" is real. I have experienced it many times and yes, when it happens you just KNOW we are in good shape. To make the stop. To tie the game. To push the lead. To close out the game.

It is a beautiful thing.

You can see Haase on the sidelines waving his arms at critical times during a game encouraging the fans to make it happen. He understands how it works. He is a believer.

I suspect that Haase wishes he didnt have to wave his arms to get the magic going, but that we would do it spontaneously at all the appropriate moments.

I think we should take the Bobby Bowden/FSU approach from back in the day...if we can't get the bigger programs to come to Bartow Arena right now let's become "road warriors" at least once a year...IF WE DON'T PLAY THEM WE CAN'T BEAT THEM...our AD played at Tennessee - why not play @ Tennessee @ Kentucky @ Arkansas @ South Carolina @ Kansas @ Indiana @ Iowa State @ fill in the blank ??

Many of our fans seem to think we are. That we are a caliber team that should spend November and December on the road. Never mind the need to fill out a season ticket package.

There is no magic scheduling wand. I invite folks to talk to the coaches "off the record" and prepare to be enlightened about scheduling.

As soon as hasse starts waving his hands up and down, we always give up a easy bucket on the other end it seems

I've never thought of us as Alcorn State...I just suggested hitting the road once a year or so to possibly make some noise/get national attention...because in our current 1-bid conference and with our usual non-conference schedules we aren't drawing worth a darn OR getting big wins - wins that people would notice and get excited about...if we can land some quality home & homes then more power to us...if not we are going to be sitting right here (like now) wondering how to increase attendance and get big wins...

We should make Kentucky, Kansas, and Duke play us here. That's what we should do.

I admit I haven't spoken to any coaches and I realize mid-major scheduling is difficult...but if possible I would be trying to get H&H's with MVC teams on a yearly basis like we did with Illinois State - teams like Evansville, Northern Iowa, Bradley, Witchita State, Southern Illinois...BASKETBALL SCHOOLS that get to the NCAA regularly...same with the better teams from the A-10

Then try to get the best of the Colonial, OVC, Southern Conference, Big South, Sun Belt come to Bartow - with the cream of the crop H&H

What makes you think we don't go on the road? "Once a year?" Haase's strategy seems to be to get the big games on a neutral court. It hasn't worked well yet, but if we can't beat them on a neutral court, how are we going to "make some noise/get national attention" in a true road game. And how is that going to increase home attendance during football season.

That's what we have tried to do for years. The only people in this thread complaining about the schedule don't seem to have a clue about the problems involved.

Keep recruiting better players and WIN some games...that's what Gene did...another solution would be get in a real hoops conference - but that's a dream

If someone has all the answer then please share them...if that's the case why hasn't someone fixed all the problems??

I watched the first game vs Nebraska and went to MANY packed houses at the BJCC back in the day...I have followed the program from Day 1...as a student in the 1980's and still do now...what some don't understand or don't want to admit is at this time we are in no position to enforce our (scheduling) wishes

I'll consider playing a power 5 away game during the conference slate also, gets us an hostile environment game in.

We aren't alcorn State by any means, but we have to do what we can to get big games in the out of conference schedule. What's wrong with taking some single game away games against big-time teams with nothing in return? What's wrong with playing some games at the BJ CC? Some of you guys act like you would rather sit home in March then Be "disrespected."
