RE: Basketball 1/10-1/16
For a little 'context' Akron (2 - 0) leads the MAC East.
The winner of EMU @ NIU tonight will be 2 - 0 and lead the MAC West.
Yep, only two undefeated teams after one week of conference play...

Interesting week for UB... Should be a good matchup at EMU on Tuesday night and then a rematch of the MAC Title game on Saturday between the Bulls and Chippewas

RPI forecast does a phenomenal job projecting, I think you can pretty much take to the bank the MAC will finish at number 10, here is there projection which is always very very accurate

Where in the heck did the Summit League come from this year, very impressive

So regardless if the MAC is ranked as the #10 or #13 or #22 conference, when will these matter and get us 2+ teams in the tourney? The conference has 0 quality wins from OOC play except maybe Valpo. So what if we finish #9 or #10 if we still only send 1 team to the tourney.

Unless someone goes 16-2 and loses in the MAC Title game, it isn't going to happen. No MAC school is high enough right now that beating them will really help anyone's RPI too much. However, there are still enough schools that if you lose to them, it will really hurt your RPI.

it matters because conference play is 2/3 the schedule. A quality win is any win vs a top 100 RPI team.
Take Akron for example. Akron has a quality OOC win over #49 UCSB. In conference play they will play current top 100 RPI teams EMU(1x), NIU(2x), and Ohio(2X). There's also a realistic chance Kent St(2x) and Buffalo(2x) could enter into the top 100 as well. That's potentially 9/18 conference games that could result in a quality win plus the potential for 2 or more quality wins in the conference tournament.
The #12 conference ranking is a bi-product of having 6 high ranked teams, it doesn't guarantee an at-large bid, but it indicates the opportunity is there for it to be earned. That's why it matters.

That's the formula most power conferences use: rack up OOC wins against mostly lower competition, and then rely on your conference schedule to make up for it because most of your conference mates have good records because they all used that same formula.

The MAC is just going to be hurt by having too many good teams. Seems odd but its true. It will keep everyone boosted up in that 75-150 range, but in terms of one team having a good enough resume for at-large, it will be hard. It is more advantageous to be in top heavy conference like MVC, and getting rewarded for beating up on many cupcakes in conference.

Exactly.. There is too much parody in the league, which is great to watch, but it will prevent any at large bids.. I can't see a team going 16-2 in league play right now. Last year, 12-6 won the regular season.

Agree that there is quite a bit of parody in the league and also quite a bit of parity as well, but that is not really a problem anyway because the MAC has been a solid (sordid?) one bid league for a long time now and that is not likely to change anytime soon.

This is a different kind of parity though, its many many very good teams, not many many average teams. This comes out in a measure like the RPI, but the corrupt committee system will never realize that the depth in the MAC is probably better than any other mid major conference in the nation this year. That is not an overstatement. Without even seeing the final records, I think the MAC should be a 2 bid conference this year if everything was selected on performance based measures. But as we know with college athletics, performance means little to nothing when it comes to reward.

The MAC beat no one this year in OOC, is our problem

So NIU had a "spring homecoming game" for the game against Toledo in DeKalb on the 23rd. Which they sold tickets for. Which has now been moved to Friday. At 5:30 pm. So it can be on CBSSN of all places. And now people are trying to find out how they can get refunds since few people outside DeKalb can get there by 5:30 on a weeknight unless they take time off.
This MAC deal really sucks.

as someone said on the EMU board, it is about the television money, not butts in the seats.
One million bucks = one helluva lot of tickets at what some schools charge for basketball tickets.
Some schools have mini-plans e.g., 6 games for 36 bucks. Six bucks a ticket is chump change.
One thousand people paying $6 each is peanuts in an athletic budget which could be say 20 - 25M bucks.
