Meaningless fun stats
Well as some of you know I developed a simple formula which takes into account scoring production, possession type stats (Assist vs TO/Offensive Rebs), and also shooting percentage to come up with an Offensive Efficiency/Production stat (OEP). It is normalized so that number of minutes played is independent of ranking. Thus, if someone played 12 mins a game and was highly productive he might have the same score as someone who played 30 mins a game and was equally productive for the time played. I plugged the current season stats into my spreadsheet to come up with team rankings and individual player rankings. For individuals I only considered them if they logged 12 mins or more of playing time per game. What I have found is anything over 0.45 is good, and anything below 0.35 is getting bad with 0.35-0.45 kind of mediocre. Disclaimers: 1) Defense is not considered so this should only be taken as offensive production/efficiency and 2) SOS is not considered here. I am thinking of keeping a separate stat strictly for MAC play after 3 conference games or so.

Things I take out of this:
- Thompson IV may be the real deal, he ranks 6th in the MAC!
- Toledo ranks the best, but really has their production spread out among a limited number of players, really will be interesting to see how that unfolds and if there is any fatigue factor that sets in down the road. Their starters log TONS of minutes.
- Western Michigan should be worried, very low
- If you play Miami-OH only worry about the MAC's best OEP player Livingston Jr, Miami-OH has 3 of the 5 worst players in the conference for that stat.

MAC Team OEP Rankings

1. Toledo 0.63
2. Kent St. 0.52

RE: Meaningless fun stats
Here is one thing that makes me optimistic

Number of players with a greater than 0.50 rating per team who log more than 12 mins of playing time per game

NIU 5 (Irogebu, Maric, Baker, Bradley, Wilson)
Kent 5 (Pollard, Edwin, Hall, Walker, Spicer)
Toledo 4 (Boothe, Garber, Sanford, Lauf)
CMU 3 (Kozinski, Simmons, Meyer)
Akron 3 (Forsythe, Kretzer, Johnson I)
WMU 3 (Lamont, Wilder, McCormick)
Buffalo 2 (Kadirl, Massinburg)
EMU 2 (Thompson IV, Nazione)
Miami-OH 2 (Livingston, Vucica)
BSU 2 (Calhoun, House)
Ohio 1 (Campbell)
BGSU 1 (Denny)

RE: Meaningless fun stats
Here is a link to the stats along with the actual calculation at the bottom. I added a defensive efficiency equivalent. Taking a total index, I have NIU as number one in the power rankings. Totally unintentional!!

RE: Meaningless fun stats
Number 1 NIU faces Number 2 Toledo according to my power rankings on Tuesday
http://godawgz.com/MAC_bball_index.htm

Both teams arrive at these rankings differently, Toledo by far being the most efficient offense in the league, but also the 2nd worst defense just head of CMU.

NIU gets their number one ranking by having the best defensive score and the 3rd best offensive score behind Toledo and Kent.

This game also features 3 of the 6 top OEP score getters (Garber, Chuks, and Boothe)
