Morgan retiring in protest as Board of Regents leader

He's upset that the power base is being broken up from the Tennessee Board of Regeants (which oversees every state institution except for UTK, which get it's own board) and individual boards are being given to 6 state schools (Memphis included). This move is generally seen as beneficial to non-UTK schools and disadvantageous to UTK. He's, therefore, obviously a UTK sympathizer and is of no use to Memphis alums and fans.

I talked to John Morgan a couple of times when he was Comptroller. He was a pretty nice guy. I'm reading this a different way. I think he's getting off a sinking ship and trying to save face by using his "protest" to resign now instead of following the TBR into the Community College abyss.
