Louisville hires Keith Heyward
Keith Heyward was the DB coach at USC.

This past season was Heyward’s second in his positions at USC. A strong West Coast recruiter, he helped tutor Trojans stars Adoree’ Jackson and Su’a Cravens. The latter announced last month he is forgoing his final year of eligibility to enter April’s NFL Draft.

Prior to USC, Heyward was Washington’s secondary coach for two seasons. In his first season with the Huskies, they finished 23rd nationally in pass defense.

Probably most importantly, Heyward brings a record as a successful recruiter. According to 247sports recruiter rankings, Heyward is listed as the primary recruiter for at least eight composite four-star prospects in just his two seasons at USC alone.

It is a big help to Louisville that they're able to have Heyward in place just ahead of the first of three very big recruiting visit weekends.

It's always nice to expand your recruiting reach with a quality recruiter. Even if he's an average coach it's still a good hire. Still a spot for 1 more coach.

Any chance he brings a few California players with him?

By my count the Cards already have more commits than departures & still have WR's & RB's visiting so I think his main priority this year will be to keep the commits that they already have. Mainly 4* DB Jaquelle Green. Rivals has Green as the #14 DB. I can see him recruiting the west coast for the next class.

The Cards occasionally pulls 1 or 2 recruits in from the west. This year we have a commit from 4* WR Chris-Taylor Yamanoha from Rohnert Park, Cal.

Louisville hires Keith Heyward

Heyward's role includes the responsibilities of two former coaches -- cornerbacks coach Terrell Buckley, who left for Mississippi State, and safeties coach Greg Brown, who took a job at Missouri. Petrino still has one position to fill on his staff, and with Heyward coaching all of the defensive backs, that could free up Petrino to hire a full-time tight ends coach.

Heyward said he also interviewed with Arizona State and that several other programs pursued him as well. Petrino found him through "mutual friends," Heyward said.

Heyward, who went to high school in California, isn't entirely a West Coast guy. He was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Queens, N.Y., before relocating out west.
He said that while he and other USC staff members had specific recruiting areas, they also recruited players from across the country, an experience that he hopes will help him adjust to recruiting wherever Louisville wants him to go.
Recruiting, Heyward said, is his first order of business upon joining Petrino's staff. Buckley was an effective recruiter for the Cards, and Heyward will be tasked with helping U of L keep the commitments of several prospects.
