This is actually a big deal. Potentially provides new opportunities for national funding, faculty research funding, and is a definite step-up in reputation in the academic community. With the tumult going on for the presidency and with the Board of Regents, this is good news.

For those that are unaware, the Carnegie Foundation classifies universities in a 3-tiered "Doctorate-granting" class (R1, R2, R3), as well as lower Master's, Baccalaureate, and Associate's classifications. Previously we were in the Master's strata, but were just bumped into the top doctoral class. For reference, I believe we were the only MAC school not listed as an R1-R3 doctoral school.

I'm somewhat familiar with this stuff.

As Frank indicated, EMU suffered from its classification as a Master's level school as it offers very few doctoral programs. Other MAC schools are way ahead of EMU in offering doctoral degrees.

SUNY-Buffalo is a flagship university for New York.

UMass (now gone) is a flagship university for Mass.

Some schools have affiliations with medical schools or physician assistant training programs.

Locally, Wayne State is in the highest tier with many doctoral programs, law school, medicine, engineering, mortuary science, etc. but with D-II athletics and a commuter reputation.

FBS athletics really helps the universities as most folks don't know or care about Wayne State's academics.

They are more likely to hear about Oakland and their basketball team.
