I'd take Major at Rice.

RE: OT-Major News
This, or next, year would probably be a good time for him to snag a HC job. Herman could be moving on to A&M / UT and while Major could probably go with him, he's already been a Co-OC at UT, so being OC at UT/A&M wouldn't be a huge step up for him, career-wise. I think Texas St is probably a better fit for him; less recruiting restrictions anyways.

Not sure if Major's UT employment history might be an impediment to him taking a job there in the future.

Ouch, people learn from their mistakes, I think he (Major) would be a fantastic co-HC fit here,
Send DB out with style, let him recruit those smart behemoth lineman we need, assure parents he will make sure Major doesn't make the same off field mistakes, and unleash Major as a great and innovative offensive mind. Ease DB out gracefully without the public humiliation a firing at the football factories entails. Win, win win! The Rice Way!

This may not be exactly relevant to your post in the spirit you may have intended it, but I want to make a point.

Nobody is ever a fantastic co-HC fit, because co-anything is a terrible idea. Co-HC, just like co-OC or co-DC, means no HC because there is no accountability. With our "losing is okay as long as you have a good enough excuse" approach, we already have enough problems with lack of accountability. We would be better off with either Lynch or Edmondson as OC than with the two of them as co-OC. Co-anything is a horrible idea from an organizational dynamics standpoint.

Ouch, people learn from their mistakes, I think he (Major) would be a fantastic co-HC or HC fit here!

The Rice Way? Tenure coaches, retire as HC emeritus or have them recruited away. In football let incumbent co-HC not quite past his prime (DB?) assure all recruit parents he will make sure the new co-HC doesn't let success get to his (or her) head, make off field mistakes, and unleash the new upstart (Major?) as a great and innovative coaching mind. Ease out gracefully without public humiliation a coach, like a faculty member who is past their prime while assuring them a role if they want it! Win, win, win!

This good cop senior mentor/innovative leader model works well if both parties are in sync, allows an ambitious new hire to move on if a better opportunity comes along and assures recruits and staff some stability as young ambitious head and assistant coaches move on. "Collaboration, Results, the Rice Way!"

New coaches value how the previous coach was treated on the way out because everyone eventually passes their sell by date! This human approach reduces the need for big $$$ payouts on contact buyouts and reduces the huge overpayment of coaches because of job insecurity.

I think it would have to be considered very carefully.

Also many thought that we should have offered the job to Major when the Toad scurried away. Major had already made it known that he wanted away from Graham and had already accepted the Bama job when Rice offered the extension to the Toad. If Graham had bolted earlier or had at least publicly taken the Tulsa job Major might have been willing to take the Rice job. Had he done so I think Chase would be in the NFL now after spending his last 3 years under Major.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Applewhite has one year remaining on his contract with the Cougars at $301,000 per season.

Interesting dollar figure. Might he want to make $800K?

That extra $1 probably gets Tilman an extra Cougar Pride shirt.
