I can tell you that I have been observing this kind of bullshyt off and on for about 45 years. The theme is essentially constant - only the coaching names and sports vary. If our fans would spend one fourth as much time thinking about how they can help move our program forward as they do judging coaching, there is not telling what we could do.
My New Year's resolutions have been amended to be more like this guy.

For same reason Yates was gone after 5 years and Finch was given 11 even though Yates had better winning percentage. Yates followed Bartow and expectations were higher. If another coach had been hired after Cal and then Pastner came in and did the same thing he has. We would be looking to give him a life time contract. It all has to do with timing.
Very true and I hope that our fans, will for a change, bear that in mind with our new football coach. He has shown a great deal of courage and confidence in his willingness to step into Fuente's shoes. Fuente, by the way, will find that as far as expectations go, replacing Beamer won't be nearly as easy as following Porter.

Avoid using that term in certain areas of L.A.

It seems assumed by many, across many threads, that we won't owe Pastner $10.6M if he is let go around April 1st. And the reasoning is . . ., just because we want him to take a lower buyout, I guess.
Seems like I hear that a lot of fired coaches just take their normal payments and let the contract play out. My guess is that Pastner would do the same.
IMO, let's hope we have a good year, and Pastner gets another job offer and leaves on his own.

Dude nobody cares anymore. This ain't 1965
Fuente didn't care about Memphis
Neither did Lynch, Cal, Rose, Evans, Joe Jackson or even the saintly Josh Pastner. And if Spook Murphy were still alive 35 years old and knew a play call besides the sprint draw he wouldn't either. Please get a clue

RE: For Those Thinking Pastner Will Automatically Take a Reduced Buyout
At the end of the day everyone will get what they deserve. Pastner will lose his job. The people who gambled big and lost will have to pay up. And Memphis will get another crack at returning to basketball relevance -- no guarantees, just a reasonable chance. The fans deserve that much.
And if you want to find a victim somewhere, just know this -- between what the fans are due and what Josh is, only one has ever been in arrears.

And the best part is once he's gone all his "fans" will be ripping him to shreds

Remind me again who we are going to replace Pastner with?
The two guys that some were pimping hard last year are both currently 6-5.

But with "Memphis' talent" and our "weak league". They would be undefeated. SMH.

I'll say this -- it'll be interesting to see if they betray their own stated principles. My gut tells me some of those who "support whoever is coach" will forget that as soon as the new guy loses a game he was favored to win. This Pastner worship runs deep! Makes numbskulls out of otherwise (some of 'em, anyway) rational people.

I've got a hunch playing one tournament game in 5 years had a little something to do with Yates being fired, but who knows? Maybe they were calculating his winning percentage and forgot to carry a one.
We won against some horrible teams. We lost to some horrible teams. Was not a good run for Tiger basketball. A few good players came through but that era made the Texas-Arlington loss look like a loss in the Elite Eight.

Yates wasn't a very good coach, but he played in a real league all five years and beat Louisville three times, twice when they were top 10. That trumps Pastner's highest hand. And he was a nice guy, too. That, apparently, ranks right up there in the coaching qualifications.
But remember, the only reason we're even discussing Yates is Incrediboy talking about bad coaches following good ones in the hope of convincing people Pastner would've been awarded a lifetime contract if only he hadn't been so unfortunate in following Cal. Truth is, if he hadn't followed Cal, even RC calling the search quits in five days wouldn't have hired him. No coach has been more fortunate to get the job than Josh -- ever. Not even close. And of all the people who would argue with that, Josh ain't one of 'em.
