RE: Women's MAC season
The man for man is encouraging. She played some against WMU too. Even so, I don't see too many opportunities to win this year. Home games against Toledo, BG and Miami are the best chances I guess. Five wins will probably be the number again. At least we are consistent.

RE: Women's MAC season
The women host Toledo at 5 in the first game of a doubleheader against Toledo.

KSU lost to Toledo by six on the road in early January and played well except in the second quarter, when it was outscored 28-14.

KSU is 4-16 on the season, 1-9 in the MAC. Toledo is 11-9, 6-3 in the conference.

Interesting thing to watch will be how much and how well KSU plays a man-to-man defense. It had played a match-up zone most of the season but played man overwhelming in a loss at Miami Wednesday. The Flashes held Miami to the second-lowest total by an opponent this season in that game.

One ticket gets you in both games.

RE: Women's MAC season
The women played about as well as they could — especially in the second half — but lost when a long three-point shot rimmed out at the buzzer.

The score was 67-64 Toledo.

KSU came from eight down at halftime to get within one point three times in the last two minutes.

Jordan Korinek led KSU with 23 points despite playing most of the game in foul trouble. KSU outscored Toledo 42-16 in the paint.

Story is on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

I really liked the way Salisbury ran the team and the way Stepens kept getting open for her 12 foot jumper. Salisbury has to be the best walk on in all of recorded history. Get her a scholarship!!!

Got there in time to watch about the last 4 minutes of the game. If I did not know who was playing, I would have sworn that it was 2 very average high school teams. Looked like a contest to see who can lose the game. 03-banghead

That might be a little tough but then again after watching this stuff fo almost five years now I probably forgot how a well played women's game looks like. It's now hard to believe Kent vs. Toledo was the MAC championship game 6 years in a row.

I'll second this. saw 4th quarter. UGLY. the previously mentioned point guard (walk on or scholly) is not a D1 player. How can she get by anyone?

Less than impressed with coaching. many opportunites to win that game and nothing drawn up to run a play that was worth a damn. she may be nice but maybe our head coach isn't a head coach.

Haven't had a point guard for four years who can score. She looks like she might be able to learn to shoot. I need some hope. As far as plays our basic offense compares to a hockey team with a bad power play. Pass the ball around the perimeter until time runs out.

RE: Women's MAC season
burden you have my full respect. I saw a quarter and that was enough for me. I couldn't watch that mess over and over let alone year after year like you do.

Sorry Coach needs to go ASAP. From what I saw you have a roster of 50% that should not even be playing D1 ball. Throw in marginal coaching and you have the last 4-5 years of womens hoops.

Marginal coaching is being nice. Also lets hope the 50% that belong come back. History shows they won't.

RE: Women's MAC season
The women host Ball State today at 2 in a "Play 4Kay" anti-breast cancer fundraiser.

Ball State is 16-6, 8-3 in the MAC and may have the league's best player in Natalie Fontaine, who is averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds a game. But the Cardinals haven't played well for a couple of weeks and lost at Central Michigan Wednesday.

Kent State is 4-21, 1-10 in the MAC but came within two three-point shots that bounced off the rim of taking two games into overtime last week.

Preview is on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com and includes some nice quotes and information about Paige Salisbury, the walk-on guard who moved into the starting line-up about the same time Kent started playing better.

Hey - coach O'Bannion's quote in the article is "we just need to win one" - and they have one MAC win, so she should be set for another year

RE: Women's MAC season
They have been better lately but I think it as much due to schedule as anything.

1. A home game against the second worst team NIU where the won 95-85 at home in a game where Lurken scored 37. Give her credit but it was a once in a career game against a team that played little defense.

2. A 55-52 loss to 3-8 Miami who are tied with NIU.

3. A so so WMU (6-6) beat them by 12.

4. Finally a three point loss to a decent Toledo (8-3) team.

I'll give them some improvement if they avoid routs in their upcoming games against Ohio, Ball St and their two with Akron.

Also bad teams tend to sneak up on some teams towards the end of the year. It's not so much improvement as it is other teams checking out after they know they can no longer reach their goals.

RE: Women's MAC season
Well they fooled me today. They beat Ball St 59-50. A very low scoring (and boring) game until the 4th quarter but it was a nice win. Lurken went off again especially in the 4th and put the team on her shoulders. She better make at least MAC second team. The difference seems to be their defense. Since inserting Golden and Salisbury for Cross and James they have been covering the three point shooters much better. If thats not it then it's some sort of coaching adjustment with their zone press. Either way kudos to the coaaching staff for fixing a major issue.

RE: Women's MAC season
I'd call it the team's best game since O'Banion became coach and certainly the best defensive game.

Ball State had the highest shooting percentage in the conference — 43.9. It shot 31.5 percent Saturday. It scored 21 points below its average.

The Cardinals' record going into the game was 16-6, 8-3 in the MAC. That's by far the best record of any team Kent State has beaten in the O'Banion era. It's just the second time O'Banion has beaten a team with a winning record.

It was Kent's fourth-and-a-half good game in a row. (They led Western Michigan at the half, then played badly in the second half.) The Flashes are 5-17, 2-10 in the MAC.

Much more on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

RE: Women's MAC season
The women travel to Akron for a game Wednesday, looking for their first road win after an impressive victory over Ball State at home Saturday.

The Flashes have been playing some of the better basketball in the conference over their last five games; over their last four, they actually lead the MAC in scoring defense.

If they continue to play well, they actually might have a long-shot chance at hosting a MAC tournament first round game. (Burden, the contributor to this bulletin board, first pointed that out in a comment on the blog.)

Akron is 6-6 in the MAC, 12-11 overall. No other team in the East is better than 4-8, and all remaining six games of the season are between division teams. If Kent could win four of those, they might be in contention for the tournament home game.

Of course, four games would be twice as many conference games as they've won so far. They're 2-10, 5-17.

So we'll start to see at Akron just how improved they are.

Full preview on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.
