RE: Women's MAC season
Stephens had offers from both Kent and Akron when she transferred. She went to Michigan State on a softball scholarship.

RE: Women's MAC season
The women play at Eastern Michigan at about 4:30 Saturday as part of a double header. (EMU's men play Bowling Green at 2.)

Eastern is the highest scoring team in the MAC but is second to last in scoring defense.

The Eagles have lost two in a row at home — 71-64 to league-leading Ohio on Tuesday and 68-65 in overtime to Akron Jan. 6.

They're 2-2 in the MAC and 11-4 overall. Kent State is 3-11 and 0-4.

Eastern's leading scorer is just 5-foot-2. She's guard Cha Sweeney, and she's third in the conference in scoring at 19.3 points a game and has been second-team all conference two years in a row. She was MAC freshman of the year in 2013-14.

KSU WBB twitter page called their 21 point loss to EMU "spirited". Sad.

RE: Women's MAC season
Actually, it was spirited until the fourth quarter.

KSU was behind 22-10 after a quarter, then outplayed Eastern (12-4) for the next two quarters, even taking a lead in the third quarter.

They scored to get within one with seven seconds to go in the third quarter, then Eastern hit a three-point shot at the buzzer than went in, came out, bounced high off the backboard and went back in again.

Then the Eagles blew out KSU 23-6 in the fourth quarter.

Final was 72-51.

It was pretty typical for KSU (3-12) over their eight-game losing streak. They played quite well in spots. But spots don't win games.

Story is on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

RE: Women's MAC season
Only very bad teams get blown out 23-6 in the fourth quarter of a one point game. I am afraid that's what we are. The optimism I had for this team when they were 3-4 is now all gone. An eight game losing streak with no truly close games will do that to you.

The only good I saw was Lewis and Stevens each getting 7. Of course Lurkin and James decided to have low scoring games so we got no benefit out of it.

Don't you love it. I wonder what the players would say.

RE: Women's MAC season
Kent State hosts league-leading Ohio at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the MACC.

The Bobcats are 13-3, 5-0 in conference play and have the 33rd highest RPI in the nation. They are ninth in the latest Mid Mahor poll.

Returning all-MAC guard Kiyanna Black scored 39 points Saturday in OU's 86-84 overtime victory over Central Michigan. Black averages 18.2 points a game, third in the conference, and leads the league in three-point shots attempted (10. per game) and three-points baskets (3.6).

As a team, OU ranks eight in the country in three-point shots attempted (30.19.0) per game) and ninth in three-point shots made (9.0).

KSU just put the finishing touches on an precented 93-54 loss to OU tonight. In all my years of following all Golden Flashes teams I simply cannot recall a more embarassing and disheartening home loss.

RE: Women's MAC season
I agree. The amazing thing to me is they were playing about as well as they could offensively and then you looked and the score was 39-21 Ohio. When Ohio shot threes it was like they were warming up before the game (by the way that's pretty much all they did in warm ups was shoot threes). They were 10/16 in the first half and 17/37 for the game. Now Ohio has a 33 RPI so losing was expected but not by 39 and not without getting a least a hand in their face. Another thing our coach has decided is to use one of our better wing players, Lurken, as a back- up point guard in her spare time. I'm sure that will help her scoring!! The last problem this team had was their back up point guard who played 8-12 minutes a game.

I looked around tonight and realized the 15 or so people who I sat around are now down to zero. The last of the Mohicans haven't been around for the last 3 or 4 games. When I think of what the program of Sherry, Smith-Goldman, Zerman, Studer, etc has become it's really pathetic. Next years team will be the same. Only a back-up point guard returning from injury, a transfer center from SIU that hardly played at SIU and one recruit being added. Unless the recruit is Kobe Bryant in his prime, the team will be just as bad next year. Also I think it's funny that the team has very little height and three 6 foot plus players are glued to the bench almost never playing. That's how good the recruiting has been!!!

RE: Women's MAC season
Ohio's 17 three-pointers was a MAC record.

Kent also had 25 turnovers that led to 48 (!) Ohio points. I can't remember ever seeing a number that high. Maybe in the heyday of the Lindsay press.

OU is one of the best 30 teams in the country. Kent State is one of the worst 30.

Will it get better? For me, that's a comment for another time.

RE: Women's MAC season
Bob Boldon enters his third season as head coach of the Ohio University women's basketball program in 2015-16.

Boldon and the Bobcats set a program record for most wins (27) in a season in 2014-15. Boldon led the ‘Cats to a MAC Regular season and Tournament Championship and a birth in the NCAA Tournament, Ohio’s first since 1995.

The team as a whole saw an 18-win improvement from Boldon’s first season, finishing with a record of 27-5. The turnaround team also holds the second best winning percentage in one season in Ohio history. The major improvement led to Boldon being named the MAC Coach of the Year. Took the ‘Cats from their worst season in program history, in 2012-13 (6-23), to their best season in 2014-15
.

In his third year they are 13-4 and 6-0 in the conference.

What year of rebuilding are we in?????

Bolton inherited a full starting line-up. None of his own recruits has started yet.

Lindsay left almost nothing. (I liked Bob, but his last recruiting class was an absolute bust -- after he had graduated five starters.)

But Boldon has done a terrific job.

RE: Women's MAC season
At what point does a new coach own the program. I think four years and almost 100 losses should be the limit. The Ohio coach might have inherited the players but he turned them from a near last place team to a first place team in one year. Our current coach had three decent players left over and immediately decided they weren't her type of players. If her win total was moving up every year I'd give her the benefit of the doubt but it's been stagnant even though the talent level has improved some. I'm personally done with her. The final straw was watching 6 players not returning even though they still had some eligibility. That essentially meant replacing 9 players this year and going right back to where she started.

Sad, but they have achieved a degree of irrelevancy. Agree, the current coach has had ample time to turn things around.

Don't know whether her contract expires this year or next.

Nielsen has been more into not renewing contracts than firing people. (It's cheaper, for one thing.)

I like Danny. I want her to succeed.

But I agree that single-digit wins for four years is going to be hard for any athletic director to swallow.

I like her too. I have heard nothing but positive comments about her but I am not sure she is the right fit at Kent. I think she has had the opportunity to recruit the proper athletes but the players that have been recruited just don't seem to be playing together or their talents don't match.

No only three were seniors. One had graduated but still had a year of eligibility left if she had wanted to play one more year. Each of the six had reasons but for all to happen in one year was awfully strange. For example a player leaving in February because she was homesick? The whole thing was a huge red flag for me.
