RE: Women's MAC season
The women had a nice start against Akron leading 47-36 at halftime. Unfortunately their offense went south in the second half being outscored 42-19. Still can't win a road game.

RE: Women's MAC season
They were still ahead 54-44 halfway through the third quarter, and things fell apart. Akron had switched to a man-to-man defense, which shut down Jordan Korinek (four second half points). After having just six turnovers in the first half, KSU had 13 in the second, leading to 19 Akron points. For the game, Akron scored 29 points off turnovers. Kent scored just seven off 14 Akron turnovers.

Final score was 78-66.

RE: Women's MAC season
The women host Bowling Green at 5 p.m. at the MACC.

(The unusual time is because the game originally was to be the first game of a doubleheader with the men. But the men's Akron game was moved to Friday to allow it to be no national television.)

BG (8-14, 4-9 in the MAC) is two games ahead of Kent in the East Division.

The Flashes have been playing better than the Falcons. In its last six games, KSU has had two wins and two close losses, plus two good first halves against good teams.

BG has lost five in a row.

But the Falcons beat KSU 71-49 in Bowling Green in January in what probably was the low point of the Kent State season. In that game, BG made 15 of 29 three-pointers.

Game preview (and a look at possible MAC tournament seedings) is on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

RE: Women's MAC season
The women lost to Bowling Green, 65-55.

It was most disappointing. They didn't play nearly as well as they have in recent games.

Mostly they got killed in the post, where BG's 6-4 center scored 24 points (the most of her career). KSU's best post player, Jordan Korinek, got in foul trouble – again – and played just 21 minutes. She did have 14 points. Korinek has had at least four fouls in 11 of Kent's 14 MAC games.

Redshirt freshman Tyra James had one of her best games – 19 points, four rebounds and two steals.

One of Jordan's problems with fouls is that she gets at least two illegal screens called on her. She still is our best offensive player although James played one of her better games since earlier in the season.

RE: Women's MAC season
The score was pretty much what you'd expect: Ohio 86, Kent State 52.

Only thing different is that Ohio scored as well inside (44-22 in the paint) as it did outside (nine three-pointers). Ohio is usually an outside team and is last in the MAC in rebounding.

Jordan Korinek had 18 points to lead Kent but was in foul trouble again. (She's had four or more in 12 of 15 MAC games.)

KSU is 2-12 in the MAC, 5-20 overall.

Ohio is 22-4 and 14-1.

RE: Women's MAC season
I love the Kent State web site comment on the women's game last night. It went something like this. Kent was down 74-41 going in to the 4th and Korinek hit two jumpers and three free throws with still 3 minutes left but Kent couldn't climb back and lost 86-52. How's that for rose colored glasses.

I don't know what else they are supposed to say burden. After four years of recaps and broadcasts like last night, at some point you simply run out of spin. It's a thankless job anyway but what the hell else are they going to write.

The women host Akron at 2 p.m as the MACC.

10 days ago KSU won the first half at Akron but fell apart in the last 14 minutes.

We'll see if the home court can make a difference.

Short preview and some links are on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

RE: Women's MAC season
Kent State played a good third quarter against Akron, but it wasn't enough to make up for a 40-25 halftime deficit.

The Zips beat KSU 70-60 at the MAC Center Saturday.

Jordan Korinek, held to two points in the first half, had 16 in the second. Larissa Lurken had 19 for Kent State.

Anita Brown, the MAC's leading scorer had 12 points and four steals in the fourth quarter as Akron snuffed the Kent State rally.

KSU committed 24 turnover, leading to 31 Akron points.

RE: Women's MAC season
The women play their final home game of the season at 7 tonight against Miami at the MACC.

A win by Kent State (5-21, 2-14) would move it into a tie with the Redhawks (9-18, 3-13) for fifth in the MAC East and could give it the 11th seed in the conference tournament, if I'm figuring the tie-breakers right. Either way, they'll likely play at Akron or Eastern Michigan, which are tied for the fifth seed at this point, with Akron having the tie breaker.

Preview is on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

RE: Women's MAC season
It was Kent State 59, Miami 53, at the MACC, and, as Axeme says, moved Kent State out of last place for the first time this season.

Not to far out of last place, mind you. They're tied with Miami for fifth in the MAC East at 3-14. Kent is 6-21 overall, which is one more victory than than the Flashes had last season. They have at least two games to go, counting the first round of the conference tournament.

The women made 17 more foul shots than Miami. They held Miami to 34 percent shooting (20 percent on three-pointers). They outscored the Redhawks 15 to 8 off turnovers. All three had been problem areas in the conference season.

Jordan Korinek, who had been in foul trouble in almost every conference game, had only two personals Wednesday and scored 23 points in 39 minutes. Larissa Lurken had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

RE: Women's MAC season
Dawn Zerman was on the bench along with her young daughter tonight. It was good to see one of our ex-players back in the house. I couldn't help to wonder how much a young Zerman playing the point on this team would help their record. I know they would rarely have trouble getting the ball to Korinek and that Lurken would be open a lot more often.

RE: Women's MAC season
The women finish the regular season at Buffalo Saturday.

If they win, it will be the first time they've won on the road this season. So far, they're 0-11. Overall the Flashes' record is 6-21, 3-14 in the MAC.

Buffalo is 15-13 and 7-10 in the MAC but owns the only two wins over first-place Ohio in the conference. The Bulls beat KSU 77-66 in Kent in January.

Right now, Kent State would be the 11th seed in the MAC tournament and play at Eastern Michigan Monday.

RE: Women's MAC season
The women were shut down by a strong Buffalo defense and lost their regular-season final at Buffalo, 64-47.

They'll play at Eastern Michigan (19-10, 10-8 MAC) at 5 p.m. Monday in the first round of the MAC tournament. Eastern beat Kent State 72-51 in Ypsilanti in January.

Kent finishes the regular season 6-22, 3-15 in the MAC. The Flashes were 0-12 on the road.

Buffalo held KSU to six points in the second quarter and eight in the third. The Bulls scored 25 points off 25 Kent State turnovers and held Jordan Korinek, KSU's leading scorer, to 3 of 13 shooting.

RE: Women's MAC season
The women's season ended with a 73-60 loss at Eastern Michigan.

For much of the game, they played as well as they have have this season. The score was tied at 47 with two minutes to go in the third period, and Kent State was within six with 1:27 to go before Eastern pulled away with foul shots.

The difference was Eastern's 5-foot-2 point guard, Cha Sweeney, who had 10 assists and six steals. She made three beautiful passes for assists when the teams were trading baskets early in the fourth quarter.

McKenna Stephens led Kent State with 19 points on 9 of 14 shooting. Most of her points came on 12- to 14-foot jump shots, an ability she had shown in spurts earlier in the season.

Jordan Korinek, named all-MAC honorable mention Monday, had 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
