I never said they were 1A with a bullet.

Just said we don't need to casually dismiss everyone or belittle other just to try to build Memphis up.

It doesn't work that way.

We also don't need to build up anyone (who are not serious candidates) just to downplay Memphis' chances.

I understand FedEx has been willing to 'assist' Memphis with conference affiliation in the past, maybe that continues to be the case. So, if one of the goals of the B12 is a championship game FedEx might offer Memphis some assistance there ... maybe as a sponsor / naming rights or in some other way. If another is the creation of a B12 Network Memphis might also find FedEx willing to help there... maybe as a sponsor etc. That's one of the ideas at least. I hope.

I agree with this assessment, as well as share your hope that Fed Ex would step up again (we are VERY lucky as a fan base to have such a generous benefactor!).

I just thing that at times some of us (not speaking of you) forget that other programs can have benefactors as well. ...

If FedEx quality --- Who might those teams and corporate/individuals benefactors be?

Um, I don't, either...

Try removing head from arse....

No, honest question.

I see only a question of television and football programs. I don't doubt that corporate support matters in an indirect way, where they can help build facilities and such, but I don't think that the ACC brought Louisville in for chicken and pizza.
I mean, Fred Smith offered FedEx support up on a plate and it didn't matter. Other schools could probably offer their own corporate support but I really honestly don't think it means as much as bringing in a school that has a nationally recognized brand name, solid attendance, and a competitive budget.

So I really honestly don't see how FedEx and Auto Zone matter. Explain it to me.

Remove the chicken and pizza and Louisville is still in CUSA.

Leopold where do you think competitive budgets come from? Booster and Corporate sponsors. It doesn't hurt when your corporate sponsors are also wealthy enough to sponsor bowl games, championship games, conference tournaments, etc.

RE: New article ranking schools that may join Big 12.
Competitive budgets come from where they come. For Louisville it was corporations. For Oklahoma State it was an individual oil-tycoon. For Notre Dame and TCU it was driven by the school itself. Oregon happens to have a incredibly wealthy booster whose fortune was made in athletic apparel, so his corporate support dovetails with the interest of the athletic department. But that $90M donation Knight made to Oregon this past year came straight out of his own pockets, not Nike's.
The point is how they get there is not the conferences problem, only that they are there and UM's athletic department isn't seeing enough of that money right now to make a difference. Like I said, I believe it matters in an indirect way, and it will matter if there is ever an Autozone stadium, but that will happen when it happens - It's not something the Tigers can hang their hats on right now.

As far as my statement on logistics is concerned, I stand by my assertion: Logistics and time zones don't mean anything. It might mean something to Hawaii, whose trying to make it in the Mountain West, but it means NOTHING to a P5, only the football team. If the football team is successful and makes money it can overcome ANY amount of logistical problems.

This is why the Big XII took West Virginia, who is in another time zone and in a town that is difficult to get to.
This is why the ACC, who already had teams from Miami to Boston, let in Notre Dame, who is on their own little island in Indiana - the football team brought enough money.
This is why the Pac 12 talked to Texas (and is still interested in Texas) who is in, yes, another time zone. The football team is the most valuable in college football.
It also explains why the Big East had TCU lined up, who was way the hell out in Fort Worth, and would have let in Boise State (Boise State!!) if it meant keeping their BCS affiliation.
This is the bottom line: The amount of money a football program can earn for a conference will DWARF any amount of logistical problems.

And only BYU has that potential for the Big XII unless they raid another P5 (unlikely). So a school that has supporters that would directly increase the conferences revenues by increasing bowl payouts and sponsorships should try and use that as a selling point.

WVU was invited during a period of emergency. The Big 12 was down to 8 members after having been raided and they were in danger of losing BCS status - both parties were desperate.

But the time zone thing is interesting. If they didn't already have a school on the east coast then bringing in a school from Utah wouldn't be so crazy. That being said, there's now a conference with schools in New Jersey and Nebraska in it, so what do I know.

I'll say this - If I was a Colorado State alum I'd be screaming my head off at the admin or athletic department for not being more in the Big XII conversation. I realize it's only CSU, but if Boise State can be in on that conversation so could CSU if they only gave a damn.

Logistics/time zones do matter. Not top priority, but you're foolish if you think they don't.

And who really thinks Boise is seriously in the conversation?

Correct...just look at Pac-12 (members located in Mountain/Pacific time zones) TV ratings...which were generally terrible, even those on ESPN because of their late (Eastern Time zone) kickoff times. (let alone almost non-existent hoop tv ratings).

And they were the hottest football team and largest state school available.

I agree to all that. But the point remains - they could have gone with schools who were closer and easier to get to, and they didn't.

They turned down Louisville for WVU

Logistics can mean nothing and it can mean everything. If you're talking a huge fish like Notre Dame or Texas - logistics mean nothing. The B12 has no huge fish candidates. If you're talking all of us current candidates, logistics has to be a factor. None of us are revenue slam dunks. So you have to consider costs of other sports. Now, it's certainly not the highest priority. But it's on the list.

Last expansion time, the B12 and BEast were fighting for BCS survival. So flagships and football competitiveness were high up on the list. That's how TCU, WVU, and even Boise made the list.

The list changes. Logistics as a priority will rise and fall.
