ISU has been a usual bottom feeder in the Big 12 for quite a while now so if Campbell can get a few 7-5 type seasons under his belt there and actually win a few minor bowl games once in a while he will likely become a living legend in the minds and hearts of the children of the corn.

Will never happen, he won't be able to get quality players to come to ISU.

And, If Cincy does get an invite to the Big 12, his ability to recruit in Ohio & western PA will get hampered more so than now. We're used to recruiting against the Bearcats...Iowa State/Big 12 isn't.

If he does that, he'll get a higher offer somewhere else.

He went for the money and the possibility he can have success there and move on to an even bigger pay day. To stay at Toledo any longer meant he would have to produce a conference championship in order to stay "hot".

He's got the cash now for a number of years. He is not set for life, but a lot closer to it. As the saying goes, "money can't buy you happiness - but it can buy you a big enough yacht that you can pull up right up next to it" - or something like that.

That is probably his ultimate goal. At the time I thought Urban Meyer was making a mistake taking the Utah job but he knew what he was doing. Jim Tressel aside, the head coaching path from a MAC type schools to a top level P5 program usually requires at least one intermediate stop and this is what I think ISU is for Campbell.

Incidentally I think that he may be more successful at ISU than most people on this thread seem to think. Iowa came within a hair of getting into the national championship playoff this year, so I think that Campbell will be able to recruit talented players to ISU.

I agree with everything that you said except for the fact that he is not set for life. He's getting like $12 million throughout his contract, right? If so, he can buy a modest house and invest a good portion of it and live a decent life (not grand, but decent) from there on out. If he were to not have his contract extended after 6 years, he will be about 42 with millions of dollars behind him and can afford to live the life of an OC making $500,000 per year. If money is your motivation, he clearly made the right decision. I do think he will be more successful there than any other HC has in recent history. However, I have no respect for him as a man. I understood when he left for more money over loyalty...almost every HC in FBS would but I lost all respect for him when he began working on Toledo commits to switch to ISU. I believed all the articles written about him in the past and thought he was a man of integrity like his former coach at Mount Union but was fooled. In retrospect, I also find it hard to believe that the Rockets lost the game against WMU on their own. It would take a lot for me to believe that he didn't intentionally throw that game to meet ISU's timeline.

Also, I hated to see UT lose the OL and DL coaches and really hope that Heacock doesn't go too but I understand why they would move. They are making life changing money there compared to at Toledo. I don't believe the quality of life change of $2M per year vs. $850k or whatever was on the table is as life changing as $200k vs. $100k for the assistants, etc. as crazy as that may sound.

Throw the game? 04-jawdrop That's a SERIOUS allegation. Not give it the attention necessary to win due to distraction is one thing- throwing the game quite another. Probably easier to throw a game by slowing down your offense but we scored a bundle: don't see throwing the game at all.

I have never been a conspiracy theory kind of person (at least I don't believe I have). And I have never met him so I don't know him personally but have always thought he was a man of integrity and would never entertain such a thought but after thinking about the ISU AD being in town for that game and reading that it had to be done that week before it was too late, it's hard for me to not think that it was a possibility...especially considering the fact that he was quoted as saying he told his wife in the prior season or so that he could see them living in Ames. I don't know...I could be way off and don't want to offend any of you but it's just a thought I've had. I'll never know but the fact that he's done things that I wouldn't expect of him (like going after Toledo commits), I wouldn't be shocked. But maybe not caring enough about the game to prepare or plan to win may be more likely than flat out throwing a game, so I get what you are saying. Even that though was not anything I'd have expected of him.

3-4 years of that 6 year deal and a couple of bowl wins will make it very easy for a school to buy-out the remainder of that contract and Campbell to move on and elevate to a new job. I'm thankful for the position he left the program in. How easy it is to forget a point-shaving scandal and Toledo Tom having this program in "EMU-like" shape at the end of his reign after Pinkel.

If you've ever decided to move on to a new girlfriend, you don't exactly have the same feelings you once did for the former. Campbell was
coaching for the last few games, but I don't think his heart was totally in it. Psychologically he was probably already moving on. Tough to put a top effort together if heart and mind aren't going in the same direction.

If Campbell was so enamored with Ames Iowa a couple of years ago he should have submitted his resume in to their AD at that time, and set his sights on relocating. Who knows, maybe he did !!!
