Wendy Tapia was allowed to conditionally graduate from the Fire Academy on May 17, 2013, even though she had failed the running test.

After swearing her in, the FDNY gave Tapia five more chances to run the required 1.5 miles in 12 minutes or less, but she couldn’t do it. She quit — never having worked a tour of duty.

United Women Firefighters, a group of active and retired FDNY women, persuaded then-Commissioner Salvatore Cass­ano to let Tapia graduate — and pass the test later.

She was assigned to ­Engine No. 316 in East Elm­hurst, Queens, but never worked a shift.

Over the next six months, she failed the test five more times. After the sixth try, she finally ­resigned and returned to her former EMT job.

At the time, UWF president Sarinya Srisakul blamed Tapia’s running failure on stress fractures in the academy — and The Post’s coverage.

“She’s small and they overtrained her,” Srisakul told the Village Voice.

I saw this... She is too small to *train* to be a fireman but she could hack it day to day?

I also found interesting that a woman who met the standards as they existed was critical of Tapia and punished for it.

The running test is probably the easiest for females to meet. That doesn't require any strength that most women don't have. Its merely training.

My 8yo clocked an early season 2K race (1.25Mi) in 11:27. No healthy human being over the age of 12 has an excuse for not hitting 1.5 miles in 12 minutes.

Exactly. Unless you're really overweight I see no reason to not be able to do the one and a half. Heck, even with my bum knees I could do it very easily.

I'm 39 years old 49 pounds overweight, and in awful shape... I can still rip off 1.5 in 12-15 minutes.

Has anyone here attacked a woman who could pass the standards. If there is a fire in my home I could care less abut a fire fighters age, race, gender, gender identity, species, or favorite food.

I do, however, care if they can help get my fat behind out of my home in a pinch. If someone can not meet the physical requirements to be a fire fighter then they could get themselves, not to mention someone else killed.

If she can't pass the requirements she shouldn't be a firefighter. But on flip side, she deserves opportunity to try. And I respect her for continuing to try.
