O/T (very much?) Georgia State and Turner Field
If one of our teams had played GSU in a bowl game I could have made a point that this thread is 'on topic' but no such luck... GSU played, and lost, to another conference, not the MAC.

Nevertheless, I'm fascinated in what they are proposing to do, namely, acquire Turner Field and adjacent areas (e.g., parking lots) and with others try to integrate those areas into their campus and also revitalize a big area of Atlanta, which I believe is south of downtown. I believe there will be a new stadium for the Falcons in the area. Yes? Other big projects? EDIT: The new Falcons stadium is adjacent to the current stadium.

I assume Georgia State is similar to Wayne State in Detroit. Yes? No?

Anyone have a feel for Atlanta, GSU, Turner Field, etc.

EDIT: This thread isn't exactly O/T. I forgot that BSU owes GSU a football game in Atlanta (2016).

GSU is similar to Wayne State, but with one crucial difference: GSU is less than a mile away from Georgia Tech. It's like if MSU was a few blocks down from Wayne State in Detroit, and city hall separated them.

I did some checking on Google maps and discovered this.

So EMU and UofM are NOT the two closest FBS schools. The two Washtenaw County schools are say 6 miles apart.

A collegiate runner can get between the two Atlanta school campuses in 5 minutes (during a foot race).

Atlanta seems to have a lot of colleges and universities. Emory. Spelman and Morehouse too. And others.

Turner Field was an Olympic stadium first. They should be applauded for getting a stadium on their own with an investment that pays off immediately. They could do the needed renovations incrementally

What I'm trying to figure out:

Will they build say a 22,500 seat stadium near the campus, proper?

Will they re-purpose Turner Field? What will become of those parking lots? What will they build there? Will it be GSU or private developers?

Will they need to build a stadium, maybe, at the Turner Field parking lots?

(I believe the Turner Field area is say 1.5 miles from GSU's campus, per se. I checked the maps, and also found that EMU's Ryenarson Stadium is also 1.5M from the EMU Student Center.)

RE: O/T (very much) Georgia State and Turner Field
here's what I know...

according to GSU, it will cost less to retrofit Turner Field for football (it would hold 30k for football), than to build a new stadium...moreover, GSU wants to build a small, college size baseball field where the old stadium was on the site (you can still see the diamond outline)

Excellent.

BTW, is site #10 a proposed parking garage serving all of the buildings and athletic facilities?

Note that now that they have the site, they will be soliciting two designs ... one for a retrofit and one for a demolition and build from scratch ... and deciding from there.

To make this thread on topic, I hope EMU schedules Georgia State home and home in football or basketball or both... :)

We have home and homes with schools like ODU, Charlotte, etc. GSU would fit that mold and Detroit --> Atlanta is an easy non-stop flight I believe.

Hopefully the football game @GSU could be after they have re-done their facilities...

The outfield wall of the old Fulton County stadium is still up in that parking lot. How sweet would it be if they built their new baseball diamond right there and used that wall?

Maybe Eastern Michigan should move to Pontiac and use the Silverdome
