Ain't that the truth? Remember when the Lightning played there for a couple of years while they built the Ice Palace?

I have attended probably a half dozen football games in baseball stadiums. Generally, they just don't have the right look or feel.

Also, I much prefer the St. Petersburg Bowl to the majicJack or Beef O' Brady's Bowl (at least the latter was a local corporate sponsor).

Yep I do, I attended a Lightning-Caps game in the "Thunderdome" in 1995. Crazy sight-lines unless you were right down next to the ice.

I liked the Bitcoin sponsorship. That had some cloak-and-dagger to it, LOL.

RE: Bowl names
I hate names that are just sponsors, and I dislike names that are just cities/states (at least use a nickname like Music City Bowl).

Belk Bowl -- Queen City Bowl
Foster Farms Bowl -- Golden Gate Bowl
GoDaddy Bowl -- Gulf Coast Bowl
Las Vegas Bowl -- Sin City Bowl
New Mexico Bowl -- Duke City Bowl
New Orleans Bowl -- NOLA Bowl
Outback Bowl -- Hall of Fame Bowl
Quick Lane Bowl -- Motor City Bowl
Russell Athletic Bowl -- Sunshine Bowl
St. Petersburg Bowl -- Ray Bowl
TaxSlayer Bowl -- Gator Bowl
Texas Bowl -- Moon Bowl/Space Bowl

The names don't bother me, other than the old weed eater bowl.

If you are going to pay to sponsor one then you can smear your name all over it.

The idea behind the dome was the heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Still adds up to a bad situation.

Yeah, I thought about the rain but still, with palm trees and a view of the bay, a stadium on the water in Tampa can't be beat.

As Dolphins Stadium for the Marlins proved, being outdoors for baseball in Florida is a bad idea. And at the time the Trop was designed, the whole retro ballpark trend wasn't a thing yet so a dome wasn't out of style. Had the park been designed a few years later, they probably would've shelled out some extra dough for a retractable roof.

My guess is that the current location was chosen because land is probably cheaper there than downtown St. Pete or Tampa. From what I've read, a lot of the Rays attendance woes can be blamed on that location since most locals live across the bay and it's tough to get to the ballpark unless you live in the snowbird part of town. That results in sellouts when the Yankees or Red Sox come there, but empty otherwise.

And playing games in a baseball stadium also must seems strange to the players and the fans. Imagine having an awkward obstructed view behind a flagpole.

It really depends on the baseball stadium. There's a novelty to places like Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, and Wrigley Field. But Tropicana is just a hellhole.

There might have been a novelty in playing in the actual Yankee Stadium but that went away when they moved into the new park. Now it's nothing more than a bowl game in a baseball stadium.

Old Yankee Stadium was a football Mecca. The new stadium is a pale imitation. As a Pirates fan, I wish we still had Forbes Field.

But if you're right on the water, it's not nearly as bad, even during the summertime. Perhaps a retractable roof or canopy can help but water helps moderate the temperature. The Marlins played in a slightly inland site, imagine if they were right on the coast. Maybe that helps.

Building a dome was a mistake in hindsight, so I'll give you that.

RE: Bowl names
I think the amount of rain dictates you more or less need a dome. As mentioned keep in mind, retractable roof domes hadn't been a big thing yet, and it would be another decade before the technology was made more affordable (now adays making a dome only adds about $30 million to the price tag of a fixed dome, though added asthetics often add more).

The problem I think is less building a dome, but building specifically that ugly assed dome, and in that location

They should have renamed the Sun Bowl yesterday to the Snow Bowl.

Yep, if the Rays get a new stadium, it has to be a retractable dome, and somewhere other than deep down the Pinellas peninsula.

Does anyone remember the Astro Blue Bonnet bowl? It was played in the Astrodome.

Still have a shirt

That's an old shirt. Is is still in one piece?

I love Mattress Mac but what a joke that name was for a bowl game. He could have called it the Gallery Furniture Space City Bowl at least.
