multiculturalism
the henna thread wasn't the sole inspiration for this post, but i would like some perspective since some of you think multiculturalism doesn't work.

i'm assuming that everyone here likes and dislikes folks from all walks off life, so is the issue more of a forced acknowledgement of different cultures that wads panties? i'm lucky to have people in my life from varied backgrounds because the world is a curious place. millions of people from many different countries call america home and we cannot change that. you might just meet someone amazing

I enjoy learning about different cultures. Unfortunately, when different cultures live together there tends to be problems. It makes sense. People with different interests clash, why would ethnic groups be any different? Hopefully, someday we can rise above it.

RE: multiculturalism
I enjoy traveling and learning about other people's cultures. I try to be respectful while I am visiting, as I am a guest to their country and culture.

However, I don't like anyone forcing me to do something. Retailers won't even let employees say "Merry Christmas" for fear of offending someone. People who live full time in the country aren't forced to learn English. Why should I be forced to participate in getting a tattoo?

Yes, and elites from the left going further to forced acceptance. Crap like micro aggression charts from Professors. You can't ask someone with an accent where are you from. That implies that someone is not a true American, which is BS. Christmas night I was on the roof of my Mom's building and a guy came on the common area deck and we started talking.
He had an accent so I asked where are you originally from, his answer was Kenya, so now we had more stuff to talk about.

Little Italy or a China Town in a big city is great.

RE: multiculturalism
Just before Christmas, I posted a thread about Cornell University's "inclusion" instructions, wherein they noted that no purely religious symbols should be displayed.

Now here's my question. Universities have long championed diversity as a goal in admissions (see U Texas Law School). They contend that diversity leads to the expansion of ideas and exposes students to others who may be different than those raised in sheltered cocoons.

In a related goal, they seek to celebrate diversity and differences.

But when it comes to subjects like Christmas, exposure is frowned upon lest some students feel excluded.

So on one hand, embrace and celebrate diversity. While for some, avoid exclusion.

We all know the answer to this apparent paradox. We are supposed to avoid exclusion when the subject matter pertains to white/straight/Christians, but celebrate the minority diverse populations.

So the question becomes, what's the more important goal: diversity or exclusion?

How about we just focus on ensuring equal opportunity based on qualifications not trying to force equal outcomes. Tell the triggered, feel good pu$$ies to go pound sand.

As far as multiculturalism, in a country as large as ours, there will be some varied beliefs, etc., which is fine - so long as the basic tenants of our culture are the same. I have no desire to import, for example, the middle eastern culture here.

I just wish I could figure out how to run all the yankees back up north and then seal the borders to keep them from coming back.

If we gotta sacrifice natural resources for transplants, let it be folks from Mexico. At least they work hard.

I suspect that you are being sarcastic (which by the way, I've often giggled at your attempts) but you have hit on a basic truth.

I think there are two kinds of people in the world: those who admit they feel at least a bit uncomfortable when they are around different people and liars.

RE: multiculturalism
Expose people to the different cultures of the world and let people make up their own minds about what's absurd. Personally, I'd like the US to be the world's "best of" album. Take best ideas and people from the rest of the world and call them our own. In my experience, people tend to embrace this idea when it comes to food, but push back when it comes to damn near anything else.
