Do you think Pastner is lucky to be so rich ?
A lot of you people think that Pastner was just in the right time at the right place.

I think that Pastner is really talented.....not at coaching basketball ... but at getting people to really like him ....

He became a multi-millionaire by playing his cards to a tee.

You got to give him credit for that ... Everyone is out there hustling to make a buck, and this guy played the ultimate hustle..

He's laughing all the way to the bank ... cha ching.

I don't begrudge any man getting whatever the market will bear. Now on the other hand the guy who thought that it was appropriate to sign him at such an outstanding rate should be admonished severely.

Josh is genuine. The world would be better off if there were more people like him. He may not be the man for Memphis basketball but he doesn't deserve to be portrayed as a slick con man who calculates his actions to drain the resources from our reserves.

Such a cynical view of Josh speaks more about the true nature of this board than it does about the man. What drives someone to post such a pointless thought? Talk about his coaching, his recruiting or his future but his character has been firmly establish as a good man.

Its hard to understand what the problem is that some posters have with Josh. It seems to be personal, but why? Is it, because their ole lady thinks he's cute? He doesn't cuss, smoke cigarettes, or drink like they do? Not a "mans man"? He's relatively young and makes more money than them? He's doesn't cheat to win at all cost? It's in there somewhere, but your guess is as good as mine.

Worst Thread Ever Nominee

... that said, I don't believe in luck. So much of life is preparation and timing. He benefitted from both. Memphis advanced his career 10-15 years by offering him this job though IMHO. It was too much too soon, but who can blame him. Regardless of the preparation, timing, genius, drive, etc - there is no substitute for experience.

It's what happens when a coach at a beloved program is given too much time after it's abundantly clear that he's not the man for the job.
Massive frustration sets in.

I don't understand why some posters always want to think it's personal, unless it's simply to make the arguments fuzzy and move the goalposts.

He was hired to win basketball games, not for all the other attributes you alluded to.

When the powers that be decide that paying a guy a top 10-20 salary to mostly beat up on RPI 150+ teams isn't good enough then they will make a change.

For most, it isn't personal - it's that his teams lack discipline, have poor fundamentals, and usually get their teeth kicked in when playing any P5 team with any measure of physicality.

Thank you! You are right. I know personally of numerous acts of kindness that Josh has performed with nothing to gain himself. Bottom line - he is just an incredibly good person. I wish we all were more like him in the kindness department whether or not we prefer him as our basketball coach.

Yes - extremely complimentary of Pastner's savvy.

And?

YES AN NO ... there's some luck involved ... and a couple of bad AD decisions. But he's there for a reason ... recruiting. Oh he can coach a little ... but he's stuck in the mud now ... and there's not much traction.

The coach worship is just as disgusting as the blind hatred that folks like PoopDreams have.

I'm ready for the Josh Pastner experience to either shock us in March or be done with.

That being said, I think he's a pretty genuine guy. The real haters have escalated from calling him a bad coach to now accusing him of being a con man.

Call me crazy but by year 7 I'd rather the Tiger coach field a team expected to make a run instead of hoping to be shocked.

No thanks. The world is already full of people who are incompetent and get by because of bull@#$#$. Josh is absolutely the embodiment of the Peter Principle.
