new coach
Those who follow college football and I have for 51 years will remember famous and not so famous college football coaches who had innovative creative ways to trick and win at the game. And there have been very successful coaches who were stubbornly not creative and extremely conservative but won with superior talent and overwhelming size or speed, like Bo Schembechler, Woody Hayes, and Bob Devaney. A team can win with no imagination if it has the great players. Niu does not; and to play as though you were Nebraska in its glory years and expect to run people over aint gonna work though Rod Carey seems to think so. I remember a coach by the name of Jenkins at Houston over 30 years ago who had a quarterback named David Klinger and put up scores in the sixties and sometimes eighties. He was one of these innovative types NIU should go after like a Dino Babers.
Hayden Fry back in the late sixties was a real creative coach with a great player called Jerry Levias at SMU he got more conservative at Iowa. Joe Tiller had a scheme they referred to as basketball on grass at Purdue. Long time ago Texas had a coach named Darrel Royal who was one of the practioners of the wishbone a new offense at the time hard to stop. Well, you can even go back as far as George Halas and Sid Luckman in the forties when they came up with the t formation innovative in its time. My point is this: NIU will never be the winner they could be with a coach who does not maximize his players potential like Rod Carey who under acheives with what he has. I am convinced that with this same set of players in the hands of a Dino Babers type innovator they would do better and the players might enjoy the game of football more, also.
Instead they are stuck with a coach that should be fired and coaching staff that should go just as other schools realize that changes need to be made so should Northern Illinois. If all those schools who made changes this last year can want better why not us. I dont expect that NIU is going to become some dominant mid level program like the Boise of the midwest. I would just like to see them coached by someone who gets them to play at their highest potential and that aint Rod Carey or his assistants. OH, another coach that comes to mind about innovative and illustrate the point that would make for success was Don Coryell and his air coryell scheme with San Diego State and San Diego Chargers. After all it is not about just knocking people down and exerting your will on the opposing team but misdirection and trickery count for acheivement and boldness goes a long way and in those metrics Mr. Carey fails mightily

RE: new coach
Yeah I said our offense is four or five years behind the times. our offense can be successful if we utilized our players better and established the identity of spreading it out and getting the ball to our playmakers like in the first drive then we went back to running the jets, bubbles, and QB draws. We don't have to change offensive philosophy. We need an identity -- one besides sticking with what doesn't work allllllllllll game.

Also, if you want a creative, innovative offensive coach, find one and suggest it to Frazier. You can't just say find me the next Mouse Davis, Sid Luckman, and Art Briles. I'm not going to bother because Rod is not getting fired.

I still can't belive rod didn't give Fiedler some significant snaps in the second half. What would have hurt. We could have seen how much progress, improvement he made after the MACC or did not make...

I think (hope) STF saw the same crap last night that we did. If he does not make the necessary changes, then it becomes all on him. He needs to do something.

I have so many amazing, smartass comments that are void as they bubble out of my brain due to NIU owning us.

RE: new coach
The interesting (and sad) thing is that we all see that we need a change in coaching the offense, whether it is at OC, Oline, or both. However if you look at the stats we are still in the top 50 for total offense (#34 but that probably doesn't include this game). Therefore nothing will happen

We had a4th string qb who was at 80%. Graham couldnt run well. Not good when qb is vital cog. Same offense looks good when you have Harnish, Lynch and Hare. We were out manned. Having acrb who is solid but not flashy doesnt help when they key on him

Running him up the middle over & over & over like Cole calls in every frigging game? Like I've said, I know NOTHING about football plays - but even I know that is not going to work. Try it & if they're stopping us - try something NEW.

That's what boggles my mind. What in his head could possibly be saying "Oh let's try this, maybe it'll work this time," when it hasn't worked or even come close to working the 20+ times prior. Do we only have 3 or 4 plays in our playbook?!

This becomes a problem too, because the players aren't robots. Eventually when you keep asking them to do the same thing over and over again - and it's not working - the guys are going to say "screw this" and quite frankly I don't blame them.
