Or how about just teaching our kids how to effing read, write, and what an effing integer is, and let the parents worry about what cultural exposures they get? Normally, I'm the guy who says "yes, Memphis can do basketball AND football - we don't just have to concentrate on one." but the US world math ranking kinda nullifies that argument here.

I have no problem with this as long a parents were fully informed and had an adequate opportunity to opt out. Sounds like the school could have done a better job of that. Probably should have required specific authorization instead of opt out.

If my child came home with a request such as this, I would absolutely approve it. But can understand legitimate reasons to object.

Good point. What if they had "henna-ed" a confederate flag on her hands? Or a crucifix? After all, it will come off in a few weeks, so what's the harm, right? Liberals would have been calling for their heads. You can't even wear a t shirt with a US Flag in some schools without being sent home because you might offend someone. Ridiculous. Learning about different cultures does not have to include branding children, especially without specific opt-in consent. Not in a public school. This was just wrong.

Yes, I'm sure that 30 years from now this kid is going to laugh at having to be the only one to wear gloves because a dumb*** teacher forced her to undergo a religious act that wasn't her own.

I have to ask when this school is going to force the non-Christians to take communion. I mean what's the harm...it's just grape juice and a wafer right?

Obviously, unless her mom keeps it front and center as some kind of major issue. Therein lies the contradictions. I've seen you post about how it's horrible that people want to ban the confederate battle flag because they are offended, but you're going to be jumping ugly over some Hindu art or whatever that design on her hands that will go away in 3 weeks and really had nothing to do with religious indoctrination but a lesson on a different culture? Do you need your own safe zone?

JFC...people get offended over the confederate flag, praying in public, lesson plans that state that you cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that God exists and now this silliness that is nothing more than a means to teach culture to kids?

Evidently, the right wants their safe zones every bit as much as the left... It's very pathetic to see it. Shame on most of you in this forum.

Dont care, I'm sure there's a whole litany of things you detest. Over 100,000 public schools in this country and they're all the same to you. Everyday all across the country school administrators and teachers go about thier jobs of educating our kids. Everyday they make non controversial decisions that don't make the news. But when they do we get to hear about it so we can share in this lady's outrage. What's it to you? Not your kid. I feel bad feel bad for these schools, they're really damned if they do and damned if they don't. Crybabies on the left and more on the right.

Not really. If they "didn't", no one would have cared.

Maybe if schools merely educated on just the subject matter, then everyone would be happy. The very same liberals that are offended every time someone says a prayer in a school (not even related to them) are completely silent when a child has another culture's 3 week tattoos on them during an important time of their own cultural observance.

C'mon...you don't mark up a child in school unless the parent is aware of it. It's just that simple.

Mehndi in Indian tradition is typically applied during special Hindu weddings and Hindu festivals like Karva Chauth, Vat Purnima, Diwali, Bhai Dooj and Teej. In Hindu festivals, many women have Henna applied to their hands and feet and sometimes on the back of their shoulders too, as men have it applied on their arms, legs, back, and chest. For women, it is usually drawn on the palm, back of the hand and on feet, where the design will be clearest due to contrast with the lighter skin on these surfaces, which naturally contain less of the pigment melanin. Henna was originally used as a form of decoration mainly for Hindu brides. -- Wiki

these designs were applied as part of "understanding indian/hindu celebrations"

It's only involving Muslims and Hindus because of the area it's in. If the area was 75% Mormon, they'd still use Henna because it's not part of any religion. Indian Christians also use Henna at weddings. My wife had it.

The parents were aware of it. They acknowledge seeing the email but not researching until afterwards. The agenda was given and they could've said no.

I think this--and many other similar situations--would be better handled if the parents were required to opt in affirmatively for their child to participate. The opt out procedure creates too many possibilities like this.

If my child came home with a note like that, I would opt in. But I'm sure others have legitimate reasons for opting out, and we should respect their wishes.
