The top 20 most profitable football teams in the country ...
1. Texas $92 million
2. Tennessee $70 million
3. LSU $58 million
4. Michigan $56 million
5. Notre Dame $54 million
6. Georgia $50 million
6. Ohio State $50 million
8. Oklahoma $48 million
9. Auburn $47 million
10. Alabama $46 million
11. Oregon $40 million
12. Florida State $39 million
13. Arkansas $38 million
13. Washington $38 million
15. Florida $37 million
15. Texas A&M $37 million
17. Penn State $36 million
18. Michigan State $32 million

... needless to say, these profit margins are staggering. Tennessee made $70 million in football profit off of revenue of $94 million. That's insane.

Bit surprised to see Arky that high, SC in at #20 and the placement of some others. Would've expected Florida to be higher.

Especially for state run not-for-profit institutions of higher learning. Has to be tough trying to spend an extra $70 million every year. Must be hard to get rid of sometimes.
Even though it is technically "us" creating this, you gotta realize this is beyond crazy, don't you think? What you listed comes to about $1,000,000,000, that's a billion folks.

Nullifies the argument that high level players would surely rather go to a big city than small towns---for the most part

NPOs are allowed to carry over profits from year to year, there is no rule/law that mandates they "break even" or show a loss.

Within 3-4 decades this will about be the upper division of D1. They may take 32 teams. Four 8 team leagues - the champions have 4 team playoff every year.

Tennessee's AD still has some significant debt, IIRC.
People talk about fuzzy math. You hear it a lot when it comes to Hollywood studios and their budgeting practices. But nowhere is the math more blurred than it is with college AD budgets. I don't doubt that these programs all do well for themselves, but I trust those numbers about as much as I can reach out and touch them.

Has little to do with that - yea or nay. Has mostly to do with conference affiliation, tv revenue and ticket sales.
I don't think many make that argument for football anyway.

I think most of those schools are located in decent sized cities/metro areas.
