RE: Bands and Bowl Games
I entirely understand the band not going, even as a BMB alum. I'm getting sick of seeing "they're taking the cheerleaders though, why can't they take the band?????" (which yes, i have seen from other alums). Even if we only sent a 30-member pep band like mentioned that SDSU is doing in the article, the band is still a huge group to take. $6k in passports alone.

Which beggars the question - if any proposed bowl site, even a really nice resort one, cannot support the two teams' bands, cheerleaders, etc, AND has a stadium that seats only 15k - how the heck does it get approved as a "bowl" game?

RE: Bands and Bowl Games
Unless ESPN holds onto it for an annual broadcaster boondoggle, I can't see the bowl lasting more than a few years or so. Toronto had solid crowds and better logistics, and that one went under.

Steal the island getaway now and get the experience. But hopefully next year we're landing something like a Camelia/GoDaddy/Boca type location. Or Detroit if an at-large is available (not sexy, but loads of fans).

ESPN $$$$$$

Exactly.

ESPN is making money while universities-athletic departments like ours are losing hundreds of thousands with the promise of getting "Exposure."

Financially, that deficit will be made up through the exposure driving increased enrollment of students who will still not attend games anymore than their predecessors. Or so the logic goes.

ESPN, the Bahamas Bowl, and the MAC have worked so that WMU won't lose on this. We'll probably come out ahead by a bit.

Subsidizing isn't a solution for the root cause. SOMEBODY is losing $ and likely no one will admit to it. It works against the narrative.

RE: Bands and Bowl Games
One of the other issues with the marching bands is that all members would have had to already hold passports before the Bahamas Bowl destination was announced. There was not enough time for them to apply for passports after the announcement was made.
