Exclamation NFL Expansion: A look at the future
Assume the NFL moves San Diego or St. Louis back to Los Angeles. Then in four years renames the Los Angeles team and adds an expansion team back in San Diego or St. Louis. The NFL announces it has bigger plans and adds another team in San Antonio. Then every two years adds two teams until reaching 40 teams.

The 2024 NFL could look like:

NFC EAST

Dallas
New York
Philadelphia
Washington
Memphis

NFC SOUTH

Atlanta
Carolina
New Orleans
San Antonio
Tampa

NFC WEST

Arizona
Salt Lake City
San Francisco
Seattle
St. Louis

NFC NORTH

Chicago
Detroit
Green Bay
Minnesota
Oklahoma City

AFC EAST

Buffalo
Miami
New England
New York
London

AFC SOUTH

Houston
Indianapolis
Jacksonville
Orlando
Tennessee

AFC WEST

Denver
Kansas City
Oakland
Los Angeles
San Diego

AFC NORTH

Baltimore
Cincinnati
Cleveland
Pittsburgh
Toronto

It would work.

RE: NFL Expansion: A look at the future
Here is my opinion for a 40 team league:

NFC:
West - Cardinals (Glendale), Seahawks (Seattle), 49ers (Santa Clara), Rams (Inglewood), NEW (Portland)
North - Vikings (Mpls), Packers (Green Bay), Bears (Chicago), Lions (Detroit), NEW (St Louis)
South - Panthers (Charlotte), Falcons (Atlanta), Buccaneers (Tampa), Saints (New Orleans), NEW (Birmingham)
East - Redskins/new name (DC-Maryland), Eagles (Philly), Giants (NYC-NJ), Cowboys (Arlington), NEW (OKC)

AFC:
West - Broncos (Denver), Raiders (Santa Clara), Chiefs (KC), Chargers (Inglewood), NEW (Salt Lake City)
North - Bengals (Cincy), Ravens (Balt), Steelers (Pitt), Browns (Cleveland), NEW (Louisville)
South - Texans (Houston), Colts (Indy), Jaguars (Memphis), Titans (Nashville), NEW (San Antonio)
East - Patriots (Foxborough), Bills (Buffalo), Jets (NYC-NJ), Dolphins (Miami Gardens), NEW (Orlando)

Go to 18 game regular season, to maintain Home/Home within division. Reduce preseason to 2 games.

I like Portland

Two questions?

1. Why move Jaguars to Memphis?
2. Can Birmingham support an NFL team?

I mean in the NFC North, doesn't fit the geography.

I could not figure out a better place. Plus the example is Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East.

I wanted to get a team in Memphis and thought this would be a good way to have an in-state rivalry while also getting a rivalry for Houston in San Antonio. I don't know the exact situation in Jacksonville, particularly how much money has been invested there, but seems like an average NFL fan would agree that market is the least deserving of keeping its NFL franchise.

Not that such an opinion means anything will actually change.

No idea if B'ham can support. They do have Huntsville population to the north. Thought it would be good rivalries with Atlanta and New Orleans. Alabama loves football, if you go by college. So answer: maybe.

Speaking of which, I put the new OKC team with the Cowboys to give them a geographic rival (not that they need more rivalries in the East).

Thought that made more sense.

Then I put the Rams back in LA and put a new team in STL, in the NFC North. I thought the Chicago to STL connection was good enough to put them in the North.

RE: NFL Expansion: A look at the future
Has anyone seen the QB play with these backups? There's no way the NFL can pursue their expansion dreams because of that singular resource constraint. The only issue the NFL has to resolve is what to do with Jacksonville.

What monetary investments have been made in Jax that would be difficult to leave behind? Obviously the stadium, but it's not new. What kind of upgrades have been made there recently?

Could the team move to Orlando, San Antonio, Memphis or Louisville?

Your comment about elite QB's doesn't really hold water ... because that's how it is now anyway!

AFC has had FOUR teams make the Superbowl 13 times in the last 15 seasons: Colts, Steelers, Ravens and Pats. Because ... lo and behold ... those are/were the teams that have/had the best QB play, while every other AFC team did not have great QB play. And with this season being #16, and particularly with Dalton and Payton being out, I don't see that "AFC cartel" being broken up this year.

Contrast that with the NFC. In the last 15 seasons, only five teams have NOT made the Superbowl: Vikings, Lions, Redskins, Cowboys and Falcons. And we could have two or three of those in the NFC bracket.
