I'm sorry that we couldn't manage to keep him at home. But I'm at least glad that he opted to go to a quality program.

Thank you for the compliment.

He has freshman of the year in the bag and could also be the first Freshman to lead CUSA in points ever.

MyBB RE: Rice's Marcus Evans and Egor Koulechov
Evans had 23 pts tonight to up his average to 19.7

Egor Koulechov had 21 along with 12 rebounds for yet another double-double, so his avg goes up to 17.0

LSU's highly touted soon to be one-and-done Ben Simmons had another bad night and only scored 16 to move his avg down to 19.3, so he might drop to 3rd in freshman scoring rankings.

HOUSTON, Texas -- For the second straight week and the sixth time this year, Marcus Evans was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week in a vote by the media, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.

He becomes the first Owl to earn the award six times.

Evans is just the second player to be named Freshman of the Week at least six times, joining Tulane's Ricky Tarrant who won the award seven times in 2012. Rice is also just the second school to earn the award at least seven times in a season, joining Tulane in 2012.

The freshman led Rice to a 1-1 record on the week. Evans averaged 20.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.0 steals. He shot 41.4% (12-of-29) from the field, 25.0% (3-of-12) from three and 92.9% (13-of-14) from the free throw line.

He opened the week by recording 17 points, four rebounds and three assists against Louisiana Tech. Evans was 6-of-14 from the field, 3-of-7 from three and 2-of-2 from the line. The 17 points also made him Rice's all-time leading freshman scorer, passing Brent Scott's total of 427 in 1989-90.

Two days later, the Chesapeake, Va., native led the Owls to a 72-65 win over Southern Miss. The freshman scored a game-high 23 points, including 17 in the second half. He was 11-of-12 from the free throw line, including 9-of-10 in the final six minutes. The 23 points gave him his 12th 20-point game of the year, setting a new Rice freshman record. Evans also had three rebounds, two assists and tied his season-high with five steals.

He now has 132 made free throws on the year, moving him into 16th-place on the school single-season list. He also has 46 steals, placing him fourth on the freshman list.

Old Dominion's Trey Freeman was named the C-USA Player of the Week.

Marcus Evans keeps getting better and arguably could've been CUSA player of the week as well.

CBS has added him to the candidates for freshman of the year and suggest he would be a legitimate contender if Rice was above .500.

Frosh of the Week: Rice's Marcus Evans, who joins top 10 of the Watch

CBS Sports Freshman of the Week for Feb. 16-22: Rice's Marcus Evans.

He's a really good player you've never heard of, but he's also the guy who's going to turn Rice's program around. Mike Rhoades has landed a special one here. Evans is on his way to a waltz for C-USA Freshman of the Year, and if the Owls were above .500 in the league (6-8, and 11-16 overall), he'd have a realistic shot at Player of the Year.

Evans has won Conference USA's Freshman of the Week honor four straight weeks -- and eight times this season. He's an absolute mid-major stud and slotted at No. 10 in this week's Integris Frosh Watch. He's deserving of cracking the list, averaging 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.1 steals. He's only one of three players in the nation (joining Oakland's Kay Felder and Fresno State's Marvelle Harris) to average as many as 20 points, four boards, three dimes and two swipes.

What a start to his career. Evans averaged 29.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 3.0 assists in helping the Owls beat Florida Atlantic and FIU last week. He was 62 percent from the field and went 12 of 13 at the foul line. He had six steals in the FIU game.

Per C-USA, he's the 12th freshman ever to hit 500 points in his first season in the conference.

Evans won the award over two other freshmen who had good weeks: St. John's Kassoum Yakwe (13.5 ppg, 13.0 rpg, 4.0 bpg) and Dartmouth's Evan Beuadreaux (19.0 ppg, 13.5 rpg). But unlike Evans' week, each of those players took a loss.
