CUSA should go to 18
CUSA should get creative. We should make CUSA a football only conference. Expand it to 18. This would give us two divisions of 9 teams each. No cross over games, and the 2 champions play each other at the end of the season. This would pit 2 teams with good records against one another and hopefully increase shot of getting the AB.

For basketball, the 2 divisions will actually be 2 separate conferences but will still work together in certain aspects. Such as possibly having games against each other. Schedule best teams against one another to help improve RPIs. The reason to be 2 different conferences in basketball is to secure 2 auto bids instead of having to share the 1.

* Represents teams that would be added to CUSA from Sun Belt.

East

Marshall
WKU
MTSU
Charlotte
FIU
FAU
ODU
*App State
*Ga Southern

West

So Miss
La Tech
UAB
Rice
UTEP
North Texas
UTSA
*Arkansas State
*Louisiana/New Mexico St

If UTEP wanted NMSU then thats who I would pick. If they didn't want them then I would go with Louisiana who I think is the best choice anyways.

Thoughts?

Its only expansion for football. All other sports it would be less teams per conference. Each division of football would essentially have its own auto bid for basketball.

We should be looking for ways to contract instead of adding more teams that no one cares about to further dilute our already limited revenue.

The problem with NMSU is, beyond not favoring expansion anyhow, is if we take them and then UTEP leaves we're stuck with UTEP's bad geography and a lesser program.

Why in the name of Amos Alonzo Stagg would we expand to 18, or for that matter add "anybody" at the present time?

I def agree with this, but most on this board would never be for it in fear of being left out.

You definitely agree that we should be contracting? Than why start this thread?

The average cost of the overhead in a conference is usually equal to, or slightly greater than, one school's complete share. If the P5 became the P3 and the G5 became the G3 two full shares could be shared among the realigned schools, the old conference properties could be sold and the money divided, and if the realignment is done with content value and revenue enhancement in mind the only losers would be those whose conference jobs were replaced in the mergers. Right now college athletics loses way too much money in its bureaucracy.

But the devil is in the details ... CUSA would not gain very much financially on the proposed move, as rest of the Go5 would not agree to raising the ceiling on the $1m/school CFP money from twelve schools to eighteen schools, and so the average share per school would likely fall.

(And, of course, if raiding the SBC of four schools places the SBC in jeopardy of shutting down, then that will just see more FCS schools get an invite, so the number of conference administrations won't actually change.)

At present, the first step to any move along these lines is, "a media network is willing to pay a premium to support the move to get the inventory that it needs (for whatever reason)." And I don't see any media network with an incentive to bankroll this.

Quote: Right now college athletics loses way too much money in its bureaucracy.
Though it's a relative pittance compared to the money that the university system loses to a cancerous metastasizing of overpaid senior administrator positions.

At some point, TV execs are going to be providing so little G5 money it's not going to matter who is in what league. That is ultimately when the next G5 realignment will start.

RE: CUSA should go to 18
It might improve the competition.

5 teams going for the west champs.
Arkansas State
Southern Miss.
Rice
La. Tech
La-Lafayette

6 teams on the east that are strong enough to win as well. Than move 4 teams back to Sun Belt.

North Texas, Charlotte, FAU, FIU. Move UAB to the east.

There is a scenario in which I could be okay with sharing a conference, I'd love to see a tight footprint with a focus on natural rivals and if that could include stAte and Memphis as a package deal, I'd be on board.
